"Gardiner told ABC Radio the award rate applying to Karinga Lakes was about A$16 ($18.20) an hour, compared to a going rate of about A$35.
Under the NT scheme prisoners receive award wages, with 5 per cent given to the Victims' Assistance Fund and A$125 a week deducted for "board". A small amount is allowed for use within the prison, and the rest is held in a trust fund and handed to prisoners on their release."

What??? I know there is unemployment in Aussie......and they call this slave labour? Best paid slaves in the universe.

1353475 2013-09-13 08:01:00 Yeah!

Get them working, get them paying their 'board', get them paying reparation to their victims, and enforce some savings with the pittance that's left.

Welcome to the world the rest of us find ourselves in. Maybe they can pay some taxes too!

Or employ those who need jobs - have prisoners work for the usual 10 - 20c most other countries give them instead.
Note - victims get 5%, not 95%.

1353479 2013-09-14 05:47:00 Resentment bourne from that fact that NZ has been mismanaged to the point that prisoners in Australia earn more then honest hardworking Kiwis do in NZ.

Better off looking to kill off what NZ is doing wrong rather then looking offshore for ridicules reasons to get upset.

Market rate? I can't say.

At least minimum wage, yes. Some were on more depending on skills.

Who do you think built the the Hampton Downs race track and dump??

As it worked there: Prisoners don't live in prisons cells, they live in normal houses in a flatting situation. They work, and they pay board for the houses. Once a week to are taken to Te Kauwhata or Huntly under supervision to get their shopping done. They pay for this too.
