What is wrong with having a Diesel powered generator standby?
Don't even need that, just a small stationary engine running the compressor, and a petrol powered water pump.

Most of them don't farm. All they do is milk cows. If it doesn't rain they are short of water. If it rains they have floods. Building dams would take care of this.

Some Farmers are trying to carry a lot of stock on land which is not suitable for farming, should be Forrest.

1353383 2013-09-12 11:03:00 quite right. quite a lot around here got caught out in a big storm. generator sales went through the roof.
a few old farms can run the milking gear off the tractor pto but most have electronic everything and require a dedicated generator. the catch is simply cost. they are not cheap especially if only used now and then.

a lot on unsuitable land is grazed simply to keep weeds down.
they should be planted in bee friendly trees :)

1353384 2013-09-12 20:19:00 Bit hard to milk by hand when you have huge numbers of cows...you'd never finish....

What horrified me was the number of irrigators in Canterbury, they're panicking now??!! It's not even Summer and already they're sucking up all the water.

As bad as Aussie, don't grow cows in arid areas!!! No wonder our rivers are stuffed.

Move the cows to Westland and Taranaki.
Grow something that likes dry in Canterbury.

Do you have a spare generator at home just in case the power go off so you can surf the net??

1353388 2013-09-12 23:07:00 You must be an expert in something mzee, because it sure aint farming!

And pctek, the broken irrigators are used for spreading cowshed washdown waste, which can't be put into a drain or river.

Like 92.7657% of urban NZ, these days:lol:

And also irrigation. I've been through Canterbury, I've seen them. Makes me shudder when I think of the cost of production - no wonder they have to go for "economy of scale".
Doesn't tempt me to farm there at all. But that's just my opinion. They'd probably think being a "tin can" farmer from Taranaki is not that hot.

I agree these farms should have a back up generator it would not have to be that big an expensive just power lights, vacuum pump and a bit of other stuff. Quite correct also an engine powered water pump to pump out waste and for clean down hoses.
Seems unbelievable a multi million operation does not have a backup systems.

Not a generator, but a UPS, lasts several hours just powering the router / modem. Means I can use the laptop / Cellphone etc, which both last a few hours too :)
