The sheep farmers complained a fair bit - wool not worth anything, low prices for lambs and so on. Still even the most complaining one in 2 years bought: A BMW for 16yr old daughter - OK, it was USED. An electric wall heater cause the woodburner was not keeping up and they hated drawing the curtains and wearing jumpers. 2 trips to Aussie Jeans @ $120 a pair for them and kiddies Double glazing A new kitchen A new TV for the wall A new pen for the pet pig A quad bike for the 12 yr old son Such is the struggle farmers go through. There are two kinds of Farmers! Those that are rich on paper and heavily in debt because of all the luxuries they buy themselves and those that reinvest into the farm and still in debt. I work for the later and can tell you they invest in the stock and the keeping farm equipment going without buying the latest gizmo tractor every year. I also know of the farmers you describe they treat staff like ****, surround themselves with latest tinkets and the stock are of poor quality and I bet you the farm they are alos heavily in debt with a wealth on paper. |

An example I can give, dairy owner friend of mine has just paid $42000 for a new shotgun, surely you can sympathize with his position. (yes that is 000's not 00's) Yeah...nah. Couple of thoughts: firstly its hard to respect anyone who skites about how much money he has spent. So in that sense your cynicism is understandable - but your friend is not typical of farmers. Secondly, a guy spent a lot of money on a toy. So what? I know men who have spent $40,000 on motorcycles that sit in the garage most of the time. I know people who have spent $80,000+ on pleasure boats which are used about 10 days a year. These various people are plumbers, real estate agents, house painters, and drivers. They reached a stage in life where their mortgages were paid off and age was taking its toll, so they decided to treat themselves. That seems reasonable to me and I do not for one moment think plumbers, electricians etc etc are wealthy because a person indulges a dream. |

I mentioned the price for two reasons, one because I am sure most on here didn't know such a thing existed (price wise) And secondly established dairy farmers since the advent of huge irrigation schemes here in Canterbury are not short of a quid, and thats a fact. Most of us know the cost of boats and and motor bikes. |

The country we are set up on is not your typical flat pasture land its actually quite hard on vehicles . Maybe there are a few farmers out ther making a coin or two but there are also a lot of struggling farmers just getting by . |

Out of those some will win and some will loose, that is the nature of business. |
