While on the subject; how would you repartition the disk to fit a dual boot partition for 8.1?
See the disk has number of partitions(to date I have never had so many).

1372555 2014-04-29 21:47:00 Just 2 questions -- Whats in the partitions named Spare and Restore & are those the default names for those 2 partitions or did you rename them ? wainuitech (129)

I only named one(spare) at the very beginning as I did not want to use all space for system. I upgraded to pro after that. None of the other partitions I have created knowingly.
Not sure if I need/want those recovery partitions as I will have(hopefully) a W 8.1 which I can make images from.

1372557 2014-04-29 23:04:00 Always a bit "IFFY" about dual booting a name Brand Install. Not the Actual PC but the install. Places like HP often make extra partitions and sometimes when dual booting it upsets the "natural flow of HP's boot options".

That aside, looking at the partitions the only real place you can put 8.1 as dual boot is on the Spare partition.

The 300MB/recovery & C are needed, the 450MB recovery can be tied into teh first recovery, so wiping that could kill any chance of recovery ( or booting - seen it happen) The last partiton Restore looks like its only that, a restore loction for backups, BUT as I said before HP can do out of the ordinary things that are easy to break.

Personally what I do on name brand PC's that want to be dual booted is wipe all partitions, install the Windows OS as MS intended, re-size the C drive to make a separate partition then install the Other OS in that.

What ever you do it ALWAYS pays to make a full backup / Image in case it all turns to custard. Normally i'd make the backup, drop that onto another HDD, make sure its worked and boots as per the original then alter the original, that way if it turns to custard nothing is lost and can be put back. :2cents:

1372558 2014-04-29 23:58:00 Thanks for taking the time off your daily work.
Firstly; it is an ASUS laptop(5 mth) so at this point I prefer not to take any drives out. If you look at my previous post you see the content of the partitions except for one. It says; Microsoft reserved partition, no drive letter.
As MS is not booting off usb drives I cannot test a backup. Except I have imaged back C: allready once after the update to 8.1 through the store wasn't any good for my old soft I need.
Wiping the disk and install OS and some programs to see if my old software is working is one option and if its not working image back the existing. Possibly need a whole wet weekend for that.
