Just a slight correction to spacemannz Win 2000 doesn't have MSDOS as neither does NT or XP, and in ME Microsoft tried hard to hide MSDOS. Now Windows 1 and 2 were virtually just DOS programs, it was not until Windows 3, that you could say "Windows" had arrived. The last MSDOS with Windows 3.x was version 6.22, then with Windows 95 MSDOS was version 7. Even with Win95, Microsoft were pretending during and before it's release that it didnt need DOS, and/or that DOS wasn't there. That was just MS hype :) |

| 279658 | 2004-10-09 22:08:00 | Actually Spacemannz is more correct than ugh :) There is a dos 16 bit command.com in XP, it runs as a window in XP, whereas cmd.exe is the 32 bit command line program. The 16 command.com is intended for running old 16 bit dos programs, it is actually the command.com version from Win ME. Command.com is in C:\windows\system32, if you make a shortcut to it on your desktop it has the MSDOS icon. |

| 279659 | 2004-10-10 20:41:00 | The last Windows with true Dos was 98SE. Open Windows Explorer, select 'msdos.sys' & right click go to properties and untick 'read only' & 'hidden'. Load 'msdos.sys' into Notepad. Look for the line 'GUI = 1' & change the 1 to 0. Save the file. Select it with Windows Explorer and tick 'read only' & 'hidden'. Now when you boot Windows you will have a Dos screen with C:> at the cursor. You may have to open 'autoexec.bat' and install the mouse. I think the mouse is in 'Windows\command' but if not just install a simple mouse driver. To load Windows just type C:>win You can install a Dos Menu or make a Bat file, & keep all your Dos tools on it. |
