| 279720 | 2004-10-10 00:13:00 | Hi Toshiba notebook. Mobile Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz Memory: 256MB Ram. [Upgradeable to 1GB max] Hard Drive: 40Gb. Intel Extreme 852GME with up to 64MB UMA VRAM Display Adaptor:Intel[R] Extreme 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller. I am getting an extra 256MB Ram put in. Will this help in following instances? Firstly, one of my Astro programs, written in Visual basic 5, [4.53MB, 181 files, 3 folders], seems to overheat laptop - fan going a lot, and AC adaptor feels hotter than usual. Sometimes, immediately after exiting program, a runtime box comes up and I get choice of ending program or clicking cancel to wait till program ends itself. This is a black/white/grey program - no colour involved. [Also have a similar program, by same programmer and in Visual basic, which does not cause this heating and excess fan usage.] Secondly, figure that SP2 will probably use a lot more memory and will benefit from the extra ram. Also, as notebook doesn't have a floppy disk setup, Was going to get an external USB floppy disk drive but have been told it would be better to get a USB Flash drive instead. I want to copy previously scanned photos from floppy disks done on Windows 95. This will be a one-off situation. Question: Everyone I know with a Floppy disk capability has either Win98 or WinXP. Will their computer acknowledge stuff done on a Win95 computer? Marg. |

Seeing as your current 256MB is shared with the Video, another 256MB will certainly speed up general Windows (presume XP?) usage . > Firstly, one of my Astro programs, written in Visual > basic 5, [4 . 53MB, 181 files, 3 folders], seems to > overheat laptop - fan going a lot, and AC adaptor > feels hotter than usual . Have you tried loading this app and then watching the CPU usage before, during and after? You might want to see if this bug has been noticed by the developer and whether an update or patch is available for XP . Extra RAM will not help out here . A lack of RAM is noticed by slow reactions of the OS/apps . Over heating is normally caused by excessive CPU use . > [Also have a similar program, by same programmer and > in Visual basic, which does not cause this heating > and excess fan usage . ] Is has better coding . :D > Secondly, figure that SP2 will probably use a lot > more memory and will benefit from the extra ram . As mentioned, as your Video shares the RAM with the OS, a bit more RAM will improve all matters generally . > Also, as notebook doesn't have a floppy disk setup, > Was going to get an external USB floppy disk drive > but have been told it would be better to get a USB > Flash drive instead . If you are not really needing a floppy drive, just get a USB flash pen instead to move around files rather than wasting a CD . Bear in mind, that only XP doesn't require any drivers installed to access this USB flash pen, the other OS's will need a driver loaded first (?) . > Question: > Everyone I know with a Floppy disk capability has > either Win98 or WinXP .
