279347 2004-10-08 22:53:00 Hi
Looking at a couple of similar spec'd PCs from Dell. One has a 2.8 GHz processor with 1mb cache ... the other has the same processor but with 'L2 cache'. Is there a difference?

279348 2004-10-08 23:02:00 In this case they are the same thing, some advertisers just get lazy and neglect the "lvl2" part.

There are actually several types of CPU cache, P4's and Athlons have Lvl1 and Lvl2 cache with Lvl1 being faster, but more expensive so theres less of it. Lvl2 is slower, but cheaper so theres more.

Xeons and P4EE, also have Lvl3 cache, which is slower, cheaper and thus theres more of it. Lvl3 cache offers a small performance increase in games but isnt needed for generla PC use. With RAM speed and FSB's increasing so rapidly Lvl3 cache isnt that much faster than system RAM.
