280006 2004-10-11 01:15:00 Hi,

I am thinking of switching to ADSL next month with the new "uncapped" (eg. no excess charges over MB limit - just slowdown) plans coming in.

I was thinking of getting a 4-port ADSL router and connecting my desktop and laptop to it.

I assume this would allow adsl connection sharing, file/print sharing (currently using crossover) and i would assign the router an ip to act as the internet gateway?

How is the connection set up as apposed to dialup (eg. Network Connections area in XP).

280007 2004-10-11 01:23:00 Basically your network connection stays the same except that you put in the routers IP address as the Gateway and DNS server in your network connection TCP/IP settings (or maybe the router will have DHCP so you would set your network connection to get an IP address automatically)

Then you set IE to Never dial a connection for the internet and you're all set.
You will be given a login name and password which you put into the routers web configuration page and then the router stays connected to the internet all the time.
