280411 2004-10-12 00:38:00 I've decided that I wanna learn how to use Linux. I don't even know where to start! There are so many versions!!

Can anyone recommend:

a) a good Linux version for NOVICES (but not complete muppets)

b) a location where I can download it for free (legally)

After that, I think i'll be able to suss it out for myself. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

280412 2004-10-12 00:50:00 Distro Watch (http://distrowatch . com/) has info and links on lots of distro's . For a n00b, try out a live CD which will run off your CD drive without touching the hard drive for eg; Knoppix, Mepis, Mandrake Move, etc .

New user friendly distro's: Xandros, Mepis, Mandrake, Fedora, Lycros, PCLiuxOS .

Not all are free latest versions are but there are usaually free versions available for any distro .

280413 2004-10-12 00:50:00 Your listing does not give your location,

Something possibly real easy.

Check your local D.S.E. @20-00 should buy you mandrake move and mandrake v9.2 or10 on 4 c/d, plus knoppix and morphix on cd, plus the open office c/d no 500+ meg d/loads per c/d to start out.

There are 3 run from c/d distros there and 1 EASY full install after that ?

other options will be offered/sujjested.

280414 2004-10-12 00:53:00 Yeah, I have been to Mandrakes site, but I am confused as to what file to download - they all look the same.

As for running to OS, I was going to install it using Virtual PC, so it won't mess with anything on the HD.

280416 2004-10-12 01:17:00 Hopefully there is going to be a Linux Installfest in Auckland soon, which would take care of both your points. Click here for more information. (www.linux.net.nz)
Good luck

280417 2004-10-12 01:19:00 Camo,

From mdk you will need 3 500mb plus ISO, that is a very long time like@15 hrs on b/b unless you have real fast b/b.

The you have to md5, and if you lose one, d/l again.

In akl dse is the simple start point, ring some stores first, i think botany still has some.

There are some linux distro stores but I dont know what thay have.

280418 2004-10-12 01:35:00 If your on Jetstream just login to the jetstreamgames FTP site and download the ISO's of your chossen distro, uncapped DSL means it shouldnt take much more than 30min per CD. Pete O'Neil (250)
280419 2004-10-12 02:30:00 Got it sorted - my work had a copy, so i've decided to "borrow it" for a while.....muhahaha!

It's Red Hat - dunno if that's a bad thing or a good thing, but we'll soon find out!

280420 2004-10-12 02:37:00 If its Red Hat then its pretty old and out of date, you may struggle to get drivers for your hardware depending on how new or old your system is. Pete O'Neil (250)
