281185 2004-10-14 20:34:00 Hi ,
some time ago I have had voice contact with the U K and certainly within N.Z.- we had echos, etc., but quite usuable.
Over the last few months that ability has gone from MSN - and all tests show nothing wrong.
Though I have had no criticsim of SP 2, in any way,- could that have affected it?-- although I wonder if I have answered my own question and tha msn was faulty before that.
Smithie 38 and I then re installed Yahoo- which we had used long long ago, and set up it's voice ability, on Yahoo Messenger-- and it worked, albeit also intermitantly as with MSN previously- but a full conversation was held anyway.
What have MSN done to stop 'voice'- we can tap on the microphone and it is received ( it was suggested we use morse code :-) ) have we got a 'voice setting ' wrongly set, in the msn version - if so, where would we look for the adjustment?
In Yahoo, the voice is/was clearer than any previous connection, but as most people wil find, Yahoo is intrusive and at best uses a lot of h/d space- and as such I would very tempted to, not uninstall, but switch it off anyway, and use it specifically for it's own attributes.

281186 2004-10-14 22:55:00 Hi, effie - I've had similar problems with lack of sound on MSN. There was a thread on this a few weeks ago. I resolved it by turning my Zone Alarm settings to medium. Bingo, we have sound. Not very impressed with having to do this, but it works. With Yahoo Messenger, can get sound with high (safer) Zone Alarm setting, but quality is not as good. KB kbcad (1025)
281187 2004-10-14 23:29:00 Hi KBCAD,
Zonealarm did that and we (Smithie38 and me)only had voice when we actually disabled it, it was quite dead before that---however I have since walked away from Zonealarm as I have apparently a sufficiency of firewall with the XP SP2 update-- and the X P firewalll on Yahoo's efforts made no difference- sound, and a bit of loss of voice at times- but as I said - readable.
With MSN we can get a snatch of sound ( enough to recognise the voice) but nothing more, as it disappears instantly anyway.
Yet a tapping of the microphone transmits perfectly and I have long since forgotten my morse code to use tapping instead of voice :-)
Keep them cards and letters a comin' folks :^0

281188 2004-10-15 01:04:00 Hi Effie

It might not be a good idea to walk too far away from ZA because AFAIK the XP firewall only blocks incoming. If a nasty with a dialler attached sneaks past it, there is nothing to stop it communicating outwards. ZA allows only authorised programs to contact the net and you have to OK every one of them.

Can't help with the sound problem, but I'm thinking about it. So far I think a firewall would only block completely or allow completely, not cut speech but allow noise bursts (tapping the mic) through as normal.

Cheers

281189 2004-10-15 01:50:00 Hi Billy T--
thank you - particularly so, I had had zonealarm for a long time and as I vet outgoing e mails with Nortons antivirus I thought I was re cooking a cooked meal.--- I wil go back and re install Zonealrm accordingly--- one thing though , what about one firewall counter acting another, so to speak?

281190 2004-10-15 04:13:00 I'd turn off XP's firewall, I see no reason to distrust ZA.

Mind you I'm still using V4.5.594, I haven't considered moving to the new V5 version. I don't need new problems.

Cheers
