IE is set to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present"
for when away from LAN

if the user is on the LAN and happens to type in an invalid website or else tries browsing to a website that is currently down, IE will give a small delay and then bring up the Dial-up connection box and give the user the choice to either dial in or work offline. The user can't and shouldn't dial in, since they are on the LAN at the time and if they select to work offline, they are not always sure how to get themselves back on.

280947 2004-10-14 01:47:00 It's most likely a problem with DNS servers. The "invalid" address causes an attempt to search the DNS tree. This will usually cause an attepmt to go out to the Internet.

The simplest fix for that would be to have a caching DNS server on your LAN. That would intercept the users errors.

This will prevent the computer from trying to dial up when there is a delay on the LAN or a wrong address.
