280862 2004-10-13 19:20:00 Hi,

Three days ago I installed SP2 on my Dell Dimension 2400 from
the Microsoft CD. Since that, although it may just be coincidence,
whenever I am on the Herald or the Stuff sites and I go further
in from the front page to read an article, when I hit the "back"
button to go back to the front page it seems to want to connect
tp 127.0.0.1. A search on here and Google tells me that this is
a network loop adaptor.

All other sites I visit appear to be OK. Can soneone offer any
assistance to stop this.

Thanks in advance.

network loops to help here.

280866 2004-10-15 20:03:00 Well since its only two out of many more. I wouldnt either worry about it, or email the Herald and Stuff. See if its their prob. And see if they can fix it. Altho, I cant say I have the same prob. Spacemannz (808)
280867 2004-10-16 00:54:00 127.0.0.1 is the address of "localhost.localdomain" --- your own computer which can always be accessed. That's the "loopback".(This applies to anyone's computer --- even the Herald's ;-)).

I'm not sure how the cached web pages are accessed ... but that could be the cause of the problem. Your "Back" key says "get me the last page" which might be www.herald.co.nz/blah/blah/121233621543245832y79.html but because it's cached it replaces that with localhost.localdomain/blah/blah/121233621543245832y79.html , but for some reason it can't find it. So it all goes pear shaped.

All a bit weird. ;-)

If you still have this problem, here's a couple of suggestions:

1) Click Start, then click run .
2) In the run dialogue box, paste the following:

%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

3) The open with dialogue box appears . Navigate to notepad, click ok
4) Your HOSTS file should now appear on screen .
5) Under most circumstances, there should only be one 'active' entry in this file . It should be 127 . 0 . 0 . 1 local host .
6) If other entries exist, perhaps these are malformed entries, such as 127 . 0 . 0 . 2 nzherald . co . nz or 127 . 0 . 10 . 2 stuff . co . nz . If these exist, delete them .

(You could probably substitute the 'hosts' part of the text string above and substitute 'lmhosts . sam' and check this file as well, for the same symptoms)

Now for the next suggestion, assuming your using IE .

1) If there's a shortcut to it on your desktop right click it and select properties .
2) Click the connections tab .
3) Click LAN settings
4) Check to ensure that the 'bypass proxy server for local addresses' check box is not selected .
5) If it is, you'll want to go into Advanced and verify the purpose of the entries you may have residing in the Exceptions group control . Just as before (see point 6 above) if there is a reference to nzherald or stuff site in here I'd say, delete it . (assuming it wasn't placed there for a particular purpose - of course!)

280869 2004-10-16 23:33:00 Thanks guys, especially to blank_harry for his detailed response.

The hosts file checks out with the 127.0.0.1 local host being the only
active. The Lan settings check out fine with nothing being ticked.

I agree that it probably is a cache issue. It's not earth shattering,
its just an annoyance. I can live with it.

Thanks

280870 2004-10-17 00:04:00 what add blocking do you use ? tweak'e (174)
280871 2004-10-17 00:57:00 Ah, you maybe on to something there tweak'e. I "inherited" this
pc from my son. There is some form of blocker on it as....and this
has triggered something with me...since, I've had it, something
has always blocked the ad's on the Herald and the Stuff site.

I have never been able to find it to see what it is (should never
have gotten rid of my old 95 beast..I could find anything on there).

No matter what search criteria I use it, doesn't seem to come up
with anything remotely like an ad blocker.

Sorry to be vague.

Cheers
