281320 2004-10-15 08:02:00 I understand that XP doesn't support HDD larger than 137 GB (correct me if I am wrong); it requires a patch or SP1 to overcome this problem.

If the above is correct, how do I set up a new pc with a 200 GB HDD?

Cheers

281322 2004-10-15 17:59:00 Bkt,

I under stood it to be reversed,

However. With my 200 gb 8mb,b Seagate drives. I have all ways created 1 partition non active/active in F disk and formatted it fat 32 with out difficulties.

In the format you get wrong size messages but if you read the bytes formated size, at the end, all is well.

The upgraded version of fdisk specked to handell 64GB partitions is a little quicker.

once formatted xp does not SEEM to have problems with these drives.

Warning.

xp disk manager does not like WORKING with drives/partitions that big.

r/rw, scandisk, defrag, boot, not problem.

IMH experience.

281323 2004-10-15 20:29:00 That depends how much of the hdd u formatted in FAT32. NOT much since FAT32 cant go beyond 32GB. When u format a hdd using 2k or XP.

Its better if u format in NTFS (in most cases), BUT since 98/ME cant read NTFS, obviously u cant use it on these OS'es. Without installing 3rd party programs.

And without some form of patch as in SP1, or a registry tweak, you'll never get the full 200 gb (or more) . Well you wont with FAT32 anyway. If u use 2k or XP.

Its better if u do a clean install with SP4 or SP2 and XP, and the info on the MS site added to the CD. (then it'll all get added once u do the clean install and well u can partition the drive in XP's setup.

The limit is something like 4 terrabytes IIRC for a Fat32 partition?!?! Obviously Win98 may have some difficulties reading it.... ;-)

281326 2004-10-15 20:39:00 Well thats what the ms site says. Obviously its wrong. Spacemannz (808)
281327 2004-10-15 20:43:00 Well, you're half correct. If the partition is over 32GB, during installation of XP/2K it simply wont give you the option of Fat32 :-) Chilling_Silence (9)
281328 2004-10-15 21:57:00 It is quite odd really that formatting using XP limits a FAT32 partition to 32GB, but in Win98SE say, with the fdisk large drive patch you can go up to 137GB, and that also if you format a large FAT32 outside of XP, then you can use it within XP.

Now there are 3 relevant Microsoft kb articles that explain this, sometimes they are quoted out of context, and that's why there are misleading statements such as FAT32 is limited to 32GB.

kb263044 (support.microsoft.com), this is the fdisk patch for Win98, large drives.

kb263045 (support.microsoft.com), this is about format reporting the wrong parition size at the beginning of the format process.

kb314463 (support.microsoft.com), this explains the limitations of the FAT32 file system in XP, and the max. partition size of 32GB formatted within XP.

There is a similar kb for Win2k and is referenced in there.

I did not come here to argue.

please Explain how I have 197 GB inf on a drive only 32 GB formatted x 2?

Do not Fall into the M/S NTFS trap, If you wish your data to remain compatiable/available to other O/S.
