| 281282 | 2004-10-15 03:11:00 | There are two reasons why you should get this message. I don't think there are any settings which you can make to stop it. Some sites are just not public. They require their users to log in with a password. No access rights; no access. This might apply to some areas of an otherwise public site (think of staff/students areas in an educational system. You might want the kids (and parents) to see the questions, but the staff to see the answers. :D) Other sites may give full access to files, but require you to go through the home page and follow their path to the actual documents. I sometimes get this response when I am trying to access something from the full link given by Google. I just knock off the last level of the URL/Address and try again. Usually the document comes up before the top home page, but sometimes I do have to go that far. (I think they want you to enjoy their advertisements or their company publicity). Some security settings in browsers will consider PDF files as a security threat. (A PDF file, because PDF is based on PostScript is a programme which is executed on your computer to produce the output). But that's not the HTTP 403 error. |

| 281283 | 2004-10-15 03:26:00 | Thanks, but before I logged this question, I got my partner to check if he could access the files from his work. He could. As a matter of fact, I actually set up the web page at MAF (where I work) earlier today, making sure everything linked as it should. Maybe you (or anybody?) could try it to see if you have any luck: MAF page (www.maf.govt.nz) I still think the problem is with my PC. It's not just pdf's I have problems with from time to time. I have another PC next door to this one at home which lets me access those files with no difficulty at all. I just wondered if someone had a simple answer to the problem. I was not responsible for setting up either of the PCs at home, so I don't know how to change or determine the difference in the security settings between the two. |
