281772 2004-10-17 00:08:00 Hi
Still looking for my next PC. Doesn't have to be the latest as I won't be doing high end stuff but I don't want my compromises to come back and bite me in the ass in a couple of years.
Looking at a Presario 6060 from Dick Smith. Pretty good all round but a couple of things that I don't know if they are issues or not.
1) Processor is Pentium 2.8 at 533 MHz. Presumably without hyperthreading and obviously not running at the latest 800MHz. Issue?
2)Video Card is ATI Radeon 9200 MCE/128-bit AGP. PCI Extreme is on the way in so will only having AGP be an issue in a couple of years? (We don't currently do video editing or play anything like the latest 3D games)

Cheers

281773 2004-10-17 00:29:00 Yup you're right there . 533mhz / fsb motherboards need a 3 ghz + 533 fsb/mhz CPU for Hyperthreading .

800 mhz / fsb motherboards all you need is a 2 . 4 + CPU for Hyperthreading .

Know nothing about ATI cards . I dont use one myself .

This should say it needs a 2.4 800 fsb/mhz CPU for HT.

Unfortunately no matter what you buy now it will be old hat in a couple of years.
Such is the nature of computers. (Moores Law)
Personally I wouldn't buy a "Brand name PC" as most of them severely limit your upgradeability options later on
Also the issue of how long a repair will take compared to buying a generic PC from a local shop.

You say
We don't currently do video editing or play anything like the latest 3D games.
Do you think you might in the future?
If so, a pressario is not the right PC for you
If not, it will probably be fine
