Are you advocating the repeated visious attacks on new/unskilled members, or members with different oppinion's, just to feed 1 self esteem, at the expence of the entire community, and IDG?. New posters driven away, probably will not " buy " IDG publications either! D. |

2004-10-17 21:15:00 | I haven't been on here much lately, as sometimes comments offered, in good faith, as advice is so often turned around. My advice (take it if you will), is to ignore any posts by some of the returning 'regulars' that are only there to stir up things. Don't even respond. If they post in the middle of a thread, answer queries raised by others in the thread, and don't even acknowledge comments by others intended to get a reaction. It's what they live for, the 'notoriety' of being a stirrer. It's human nature to bite back when bitten, but this is an online forum. Silence is sometimes mightier than a roar. J :D

2004-10-17 21:55:00 | >I have never seen a vicious attack made on a new member, ever. An attack doesn't have to be vicious to have a bad effect. Low level bitching and sniping, carried on long enough can actually be worse than a single big cat fight. Many of the threads I get directed too don't contain anything that taken at face value is more than a bit of a slap. But the animosity these things generates builds up over time. Even more importantly, other users, who have no interest in some personal catfight being played out by a handful, are getting feed up with threads being hijacked by these feuds. Metla, you're a guy who says what he thinks and can take it on the chin without it bothering you at all. But not all users are like that, and if they are the recipient of a comment that you or others may not think twice about will take it to heart.

2004-10-17 22:26:00 | Jester, What you are sejjesting is a variation on the English "Coventry" System. Where an offender is completley ignored by the rest of the Community. Any member of the Community who contravenes the ban (communicates with the offender) will be also sent to "Coventry". The online Enviroment is quite suited to this "system" but its application if agreed by the stable longstanding majority, must be publicised. D.

2004-10-17 23:38:00 | See where this is going? Sometimes the most inocuous posting turns into a sh1tfight for no obvious reason. We don't want to create a bitching zone, but it is really offputting how often things turn nasty. I let niggles go, because I have to, and I don't niggle back (try not to) but it used to be that most of the regulars were people you'd happily chat to at a pub. I know that sounds like whinging about the good old days, but it is true. I don't even know who is on who's side, and I worry that people with genuine problems don't get the help that they need. robo.
