2004-10-17 02:37:00 | Hi there, My laptop is sooooooooooooo slow! When trying to de-frag, it can take 4 hours - and then it doesn't seem to make any difference. Opening a document can take long long moments, and menu's can sit empty for long moments too before populating. The drive size is 21GB (partitioned) and is running XP Pro on a network via a Router. I have a feeling it shouldn't be FAT32 drive when running XP. We use Norton Utilities to de-frag. Any suggestions greatly appreciated! :-) Cheers Lynda

2004-10-17 02:44:00 | Defrag using Windows defragmenter in safe mode. FAT32 , or NTFS can be used on a network. (With XP). | Spacemannz (808) | |
2004-10-17 03:47:00 | sounds to me like there are a lot of background services running get someone to check out what's running & see if it's necessary or have a look here www.blackviper.com I'd always defrag in safemode as already suggested. probably some good advice in the PF1 FAQ's as well

2004-10-18 03:36:00 | have you done a virus and spyware scan? | Prescott (11) | |
2004-10-18 03:47:00 | Virus scan yes, but spyware no. Don't have a spyware program. Would you have a suggestion? Thanks for your help :-) Cheers Lynda

2004-10-18 03:54:00 | Also check that you have a reasonable amount of free space on your C: partition. If there is not enough room then everything will slow right down. I must say though I find defrag very very slow in XP and W2k compared to Win98. I ended up buying Diskeeper, it just runs in the background and defrags quietly when it thinks it will. Adaware is a good anti-spyware program: www.lavasoftusa.com
