| 281691 | 2004-10-16 08:47:00 | I bought a 2nd hand machine (P3-10GB-156RAM)without an OS & tried to install Red Hat9. No luck with CD1 but RH9 floppy start up presented Kernel question & went no further. Plan B - install my Windows ME; then do a clean install of Linux(how could that nice Mr Gates object). My ME floppy start up disc got me going, then the CD; all went well untill the final 'insert your 14 digit thingy.' Is there a way round this. The computer wont boot from any CD(ie Knoppix & others). Start up presents no choice to press Del or F1 to get into BIOS. I'm an elderly newby so don't ask why I dont dual boot on this computer(10 grandchildren & KVM set at a garage sale). |

But Sarum What you trying to do with maybe illegal especially if you or someone else is using same OS with the same 14 digit number. My reccommendation read the redhat installtion documentation there is a way round this non read of a boot cdrom and the instructions are in the installation notes on the fist cdrom use another PC to read them normally in /docs/install. you can open the cdrom like a normall cdrom you dont need to boot from it to read the installation notes. There is also a lot of other usefull on that disk you may what to read |

| 281694 | 2004-10-17 07:50:00 | Thanks to both of you. I know its illegal to use ME's CD again but for such a short time. I shall study the info: on CD1 again; it was from that CD that I copied the floppy start up. TradeMe is full of computers with windows OS 'For Demonstration Only' presumably these are illegal copies. So how do they do it; or is it geekstuff. I shall also try a newer RH and I've Mandrake to try. Thanks again, and thanks to F1, I've not asked a lot of questions but I've learned enough to keep looking. | sarum (6222) | ||
| 281695 | 2004-10-19 07:58:00 | I tried and tried with Linux info:, back to ME & remembered to insert my last name & both initials - ME installed ilegally but then replaced with Linux. Once again my thanks to all those who respond to the likes of me. | sarum (6222) | ||
