2004-10-19 00:33:00 | I have got big problems with home networking with windows xp sp2. I had previously set up a network with the desktop on xp home as host and the laptop on xp pro as the client. ICS was working as well as file and prinbt sharing. I installed xp sp2 on the host and the trouble began. I thought installing xp sp2 on the client would help but no joy! I ran the wizards on both computers repeatedly, changed the name of the network, disabled the sp2 firewall and then trited manually configuring. This worked for a few minutes (I could see all the computers on the network from both computers and access all files etc) until I tried to use ICS again, then it all fell to pieces and again nothing works. What can I do? I was using the ip address 192.168.0.1 for the host and 192.168.0.2 for the client and 192.168.0.1 for the DNS and gateway on the client. I think this is correct? But it doesn't work. I am currently getting the error message: "no access to the network, you may not have permission blah, blah , blah" I get this even with sp2 firewall diabled on both computers and zone alarms disabled as well (and the network is up and running according to the little computers in the taskbar) What can I do?

Host is 192.168.0.1 Client as you've said is 192.168.0.2 4. Under the LAN icon/Properties/TCPIP, select use the following ip adress. Put in 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.0.1 and preferred DNS server 192.168.0.1 (or enter the primary ip address of your isp and your secondary ip address of your isp, under preferred ip and alternate ip address. Somehow, I think ZA if it isnt registered, wont give you the ICS option if its on (I dont use ZA, so not 100% sure). BUT I wouldnt go onto the net, with NO firewall at all. You're asking for trouble. Also under my computer/tools/folder options/view make sure simple file sharing is ticked ( if you want to share files on both). And to share files in the first place, create a folder, and share a folder (not the whole hard drive). |

2004-10-19 08:22:00 | Right, I checked both workgroups are the same, and they are. Host ip address is 192.168.0.1 Host subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Host default gateway >> nothing Host DNS server >> nothing Client IP address 192.168.0.2 Client subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Client default gateway 192.168.0.1 Client DNS server 192.168 xp home sp2 firewall on host >> disabled xp pro sp2 firewall on client >> disabled Got the latest version of zone alarm pro and it detected a network with ip address 192.168.0.0 and has put it in the trusted zone I can now access the computers on the network I think the problem was either the older version of zone alarm or the fact that I had originally set the host computer's default gateway and dns settings to the same as the client I have checked the boxes in the internet connection for the host to allow access to the internet from other computers on the network and I have set zonealarm's ics setting to this computer is an ics/nat gateway I still can't access the internet from the client laptop Is there anything I can do?

2004-10-19 19:54:00 | Is ZA installed on the client as well?? Or just the host PC?? I see your version of ZA has the ICS option, which sounds right what you've done . Normally, ZA would be the prob . Unless the version you have of ZA, has the ICS option, or something similar to this is the ICS /gateway pc somewhere . Then I dont think the client will get on the net . I'm not too sure if this ICS only appears in a registered (or Pro version of ZA) . I maybe wrong . As I dont use ZA myself . I see on the client the DNS server is just 192 . 168 . That is MEANT to be 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 Or is this a typo?? You have to put 0 . 1 at the end of as well for it to work .

2004-10-20 01:20:00 | yeah that last bit was a typo. If I disable ZA pro I still can't access the internet. The client has no firewall (other than xp sp2's firewall which I disabled thinking that might be the problem) I saw on another post that you need to disable sp2 firewall from control panel>>firewall>>advanced>>enable for the following connections and uncheck those you wish to disable the firewall for. I tried this as well but still no joy. I am at a complete loss

2004-10-20 01:32:00 | Nup . Cant think of anything else it can be then, if SP2's firewall is off and ZA . And the client still cant get on the net . What I put here earlier, should have let the client on the net . The only other thing I can think of the NIC on the client is 1/2 stuffed or something . I use SP2 on 2 PC's here . And both can share and get on the net . No prob at all . Umm are u using a crossover cable or a hub for the network?? Hopefully one or the other .

2004-10-20 09:06:00 | crossover cable Problem is solved! I downloaded the free proxy server software analogx. network and internet are now working alongside za pro firewall Don't know much about analogx but it works. Is it safe?

2004-10-20 18:23:00 | Sounds like ZA was stuffing things up. Never heard of Analogx. I just use Norton Internet Security, and ICS. They work fine together. | Spacemannz (808) | |

2004-10-20 20:19:00 | Host default gateway >> nothing Host DNS server >> nothing How is ICS going to work when the host doesn't know what the default gateway or DNS server is?
