282542 2004-10-18 22:01:00 Hi

I am running a laptop on a high speed connection. Just wondering what the best firewall is? I have tried Sygate, Kerio, ZoneAlarm but they were just freeware versions though I am using ZA Pro trial now. I am considering buying one.

Which do you think? Or are there any good freeware ones ;)

Kind Regards,

282543 2004-10-18 22:09:00 I've been running ZA free for a few years now & apart from the last version stopping my Photosmart Printer from printing (fixed now) I've never had any problems.
It can screw up every now & again but is pretty easy to fix (haven't seen it screwing up any machines for a fair while now though)
I tried Kerio recently & didn't really like it, it seemed to have trouble remembering repeat access I'd allowed.
As long as you have adequate AV protection & run the ususal spyware cleaners etc I see no need to pay for the Pro version
imo

282544 2004-10-18 22:51:00 Theres one made by Omniquad at www.omniquad.com its a free firewall but it does not get updated afaik but at least its a lot smaller and just as fast.

One caveat is that at system startup the main screen appears and program settings are on a per user basis.
eg each user needs to set their program acces individually unlike zonealarm

282548 2004-10-18 23:04:00 PC-Cillin 2002 is what I use, has built in anti-virus and firewall. It works really well. I got it off my mobo CD all I had to do was register and that was it.

It's very good at detecting and pretty much runs by itself with very little interaction from the user. It is also good at blocking malicious code while your surfing the web.

If you're looking at buying a package I would go with PC-Cillin... I think their latest one is called PC-Cillin Internet security.

good hunting

cheers

282549 2004-10-18 23:42:00 Kerio for me. Need to make sure you tick the right boxes when setting the rules, especially if specific.

ZA and I did not get along. Used PCcillins for a little while, although a bit more to learn, preferred the control Kerio gave me (just used cillin for AV).

282550 2004-10-18 23:49:00 Zonealarm has been good to me,Kerio bluescreened on me,Did not like anything about pc-cillin.

I think you may have to pick the one you like best...

Have you priced a hardware firewall?

282551 2004-10-18 23:54:00 Hardware firewall offer the most robust incoming protection but are no good for a lappy on the road or for outgoing. In an ideal world you'd have both hardware and software.
