282500 2004-10-18 20:06:00 It's my fault really. I have experience of using Genius mouses in the past. They all gave trouble. So why did I buy another last year? Well I reckoned that as they were still selling they must have improved. My Genius Optical mouse is nice to use - I was very pleased with it until this week when it stopped working. (Just outside the guarantee!). I could take it back to The Big Byte (under the shops Guarantee AcT)but I know it will work perfectly on test because when I took it off my desktop (win98) and put it on the Laptop (WinXP) it had no problems - I didn't even have to put the drivers in. It still works fine. But it is really far too big for my laptop. Replacing it on the desktop it works fine for a while then shuts down again. I have re-installed the drivers (that was a job in itself - the first disk I got was blank - the replacement works OK but asks for a second disk which doesn't exist on the first attempt - then works fine after that.)
I would like to put my tiddly little mouse back on the laptop and the Genius back on the desktop - any theories and suggestions about getting the brat to work will be appreciated.

282501 2004-10-18 20:46:00 I have three Genius 5 button scrolling optical mice and all work OK on W98 & W2K. It sounds like you have a driver problem rather than a hardware fault if it works on another computer.

My driver disk has a single 1405KB "setup.exe. Would you like me to email you the file? You should uninstall the previous driver before installing new drivers BTW. Did you do that?

Cheers

282503 2004-10-19 01:19:00 Thank you BillyT. It's amazing the number of times I have told people they should always uninstall or delete drivers before re-installing them. So of course I completely ignore my own advice. BillyT I did the right thing after reading your letter and went through the entire process again. WOW !! This time I have an entry on the taskbar for the mouse (never seen that before). I often wondered why I had side buttons on the thing. Now I know what they do. I also know that under no circumstances should I try the orientation screen - chaos ensues!!
Anyway its up and running again - I just hope it will keep running. If not it goes in the round file. Thank you also to the other person who replied. It is a PS2 mouse and I will remember your comment.
