282482 2004-10-18 19:32:00 I am thinking of buying a new Task 520Watt power supply

www.stylespc.com

and was wondering what everyone thinks of this brand - I am upgrading from a task case psu ( the one that came with my case ) ( 400 W ) , and i think it is giving me problems. Anyway the new one i am planning on getting is $125 - if you know anything better in this price range please tell me

282484 2004-10-20 00:37:00 Hi Amit

From the lack of replies it would seem that Task power supplies are an unknown quantity. I did quick search and couldn't find anything useful either so why chance your luck when you can buy a known reliable brand with a meaningful power rating?

Task's 500+ watts might be somebody else's genuine 400 watts. Styles will tell you it is OK, so it is no use asking them.

BTW, do you really need more than 500 watts?

Cheers

282485 2004-10-20 01:12:00 So let me get this right your upgrading a PSU you think is giving you problems to another PSU from the same brand just with more wattage? I've never used a Task PSU but i wouldnt trust one, if your short on cash try thermaltake, you can get a 420w thermaltake for around the same price. Ive got a thermaltake 420w running 3 HDD's 2 optical drives and a overclocked Athlon system with a 9800PRO and everything runs fine. Pete O'Neil (250)
282486 2004-10-20 01:25:00 I have that PSU and it is one of the best I have ever owned. I bought this to replace my old $230 thermaltake that could no longer handle the load.

The 520W rating on the task PSU is the true watt output, they are capable of upto 590W at peak load.

The killer feature for me was the 26Amps on the +12v rail, which is very high considering most generic 400W PSU only have 10Amps and my Thermaltake had 18Amps.

Running off the PSU I have:

1x AthlonXp 3200+
1x Radeon 9800pro
3x HDDs
1x Floppy
1x DVD Writer
1x CD writer
1x TV Tuner
1x Network Card

This should give you some idea of the load that the Task PSU can take.

Lastly, the Task PSU is very quiet and keeps my system nice and cool

What's the model no. of your thermaltake? I'm thinking maybe my old one was a lemon

282488 2004-10-20 02:00:00 The rating on that task PSU seem very high a Antec 550w only has 24A on the 12v rail, although a Enermex 550w has 36A.

My thermaltake is just a 420w Silent Purepower, its nothing special but it does it job. I know several people with thermaltake PSU's and they speak highly of them.

If it was me i'd buy the Thermaltake over the Task purely because its a well established brand, reviews are easy to find and there very common. They dont rank up there with Enermex or Antec but there still very good PSU's.

282489 2004-10-20 02:15:00 Hey Pete,

This is unrelated but if you have 2 seconds to spare can you jump over to my cpu page and see if you see anything out of place,Just redone the catagories and need a critical(and knowledgable)opinion.

282490 2004-10-20 03:14:00 Had a quick look metla everything seems ok, will have another look when i get home from work . Did notice that you were using AthlonXP pics for your Athlon64 chips, tssk tssk metla ;) . The naming scheme youve used for you Athlon64's seems a bit strange to me, instead of "AMD K8 64bit Athlon 2800" I would have used "AMD Athlon64 2800+" . Nice to see a company that uses a uniform naming scheme and clearly seperates the different cores and sockets, i know when i was buying my first PC the differences between CPU's was very confusing .

Was talking to my dealer friends up here in jafaville and they said AthlonXP's were very hard to source if this was true you could kill it from the website to save confussion, likewise with with the Northwoods . Any plans to list the socket 754 Semprons?
