282418 2004-10-18 09:43:00 Looks like most of the decent PC shops around here sell Intel.I'm looking for an up-to-date system, and have been following the Intel PCI Express(?)video card developments. Is AMD going this way too?And I know it would be a lot cheaper to assemble one myself, but I would like the backup security option as my work program would be on this pc.And I haven't the foggiest what to put together anyhow. It's one thing to read lots of mags and Press F1,but another thing entirely to put it into action!! Thanks. Neil McC (178)
282419 2004-10-18 09:49:00 If your local shops don't appear to overtly support AMD products check out their online presence, where available, I'm sure you'll find they'll at least be willing to order the gear you want in. Most won't carry heaps of stock anyway.

Other than that, I don't know what's up your way.

282420 2004-10-18 10:43:00 Unfortunately , there doesn't seem to be any decent stores in Hawkes Bay, either online or normally.
The trouble I've had so far is, haven't ordered parts when you've asked for them, haven't come back with prices, haven't really had the expertise when ordering later model gear.
I've taken to ordering off the net for my products now.
A good store in Hawkes Bay would be most beneficial though :)

282421 2004-10-18 18:48:00 I've had that too,Raikyn. One shop(Intel) is good at quoting, others don't seem know what I'm asking about for the latest gear, and others just don't bother replying to requests for a quote, even though I'd been in and gone through it with them!! Neil McC (178)
282422 2004-10-18 18:52:00 I have given up all hope of finding a good store in Hawkes Bay (I live in Hastings). After hunting around, PC Country in Napier (formerly PC Company franchisee) had very good service, staff were very knowledgeable, but only sold pre-assembled PCs from what I could see.

I found ordering online from a larger nationwide store (eg. QMB, Ascent etc) is the cheapest way, and probably the easiest, especially if you know what you're after.

They don't list AMD as one of their "Hardware Brands Represented" :-(

282425 2004-10-18 21:36:00 AMD will eventually shift over to PCIe, VIA has just released the K8T890 chipset and nVidia is very close to releasing the nForce4 both will have support for PCIe. AMD isnt likely to support DDR2 for atleast another 3-6months, as AMD's memory controller is intergrated into the CPU it will require major changes, and possibly a new socket. Also AMD benefits more from lower latencies than it does for huge amounts of bandwidth, thus sticking with older DDR offers better performance. Pete O'Neil (250)
282426 2004-10-18 23:33:00 Thanks for your comments.PC Central is the best I've found here, but they only do Intel and the case is sealed. And they're not recommending PCIE yet as they say the motherboards have been having problems, and to wait a couple of months, which I don't mind, and it's good that they're upfront with it.And PC Country is a good firm but only sell their made up units. 282427 2004-10-19 00:31:00 www.ascent.co.nz are one of the best retailers in NZ, completely online so they dont have a showroom, but are freight free nationwide. You can order all your parts seperatly and build you system yourself or they can build it for you. They're also one of the cheapest in NZ. Pete O'Neil (250)
