282355 2004-10-18 07:58:00 i need to d/l a big linux cd image
i was thinking about downloading straight onto my ext. hd
i bought one with a case and a notebook hd in it

if i plugged it in usb and leave it there for a couple of days
would it be alright??
or is keeping an ext. hd on for too long bad for it?
or doesn't it matter at all??

282356 2004-10-18 08:01:00 I don't see why leaving it on for two days would hurt it (though don't blame me if it does).

It sounds like it would be a pretty poor harddrive if it can't go for two days without a break.

282359 2004-10-18 09:34:00 If its this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) one, no it does not apparently.

In normal operation a HDD will run 24/7, so leaving it on is not likely to be injurious to its health. As long as its not running too hot, but it should be OK in an external case as it gets no CPU heat on it.

As to your USB being able to sustain the high drain when its already been giving you trouble (as per the link above), thats possibly another story (or have you cured that?)

282362 2004-10-18 10:39:00 How hot is too hot for a hard drive Godfather?

I have sensors reading:

50°C for my Seagate drive
44°C for my Western Digital Drive

Within acceptable range?? They are hot to the touch.
