282325 2004-10-18 07:09:00 On my new server running Windows 2000 Adv Server, svchost uses 99% or 100% CPU, causing the PC to run horribly slow and not serve properly.

My website is down because of this, as is e-mail.

I reckon installing SP4 might help, but I can't because of the problem (just stops at 'Collecting information' or something).

I will be looking further into the problem shortly, I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,
George

282326 2004-10-18 07:25:00 Update:

Looked at it with Process Explorer (by Sysinternals). Pausing the svchost responsible seems to fix it, but it seems required to launch programs.

But just now I have reinstated it and it is going OK. I will use this opportunity to install SP4.

Please help though, I need this server to be reliable.

282327 2004-10-18 08:08:00 Installing SP4 was a failure, it just has errors!

CPU's back on 100% but on and off. I can't install Exchange because it needs SP1 or above.

Please help - I'm not getting important e-mails, nor is ANYONE using my mail server.

282328 2004-10-18 08:12:00 I know absolutely nothing about Win2k Server, but:

Have you checked for virii, trojans, spyware etc.?

282329 2004-10-18 08:23:00 You might want to take a look Here (www.kephyr.com) then check what directory your troublesome file is in.

282330 2004-10-18 08:34:00 It's not spyware.

I have only had Windows installed since 6:30PM today, and have a firewall.

Also, it has been happening since the very first start of Windows.

282331 2004-10-18 08:41:00 Isn't this the scenario where you are meant to delete everything in the
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS or something folder?

I can't remember the exact one, But I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

282332 2004-10-18 08:47:00 Theres nothing in there to delete . I'm going to post some log entries:

grovel (892) Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -1811 .

grovel (892) Unable to write a shadowed header for file \\?\Volume{91d5742a-20c7-11d9-985a-806d6172696f}\SIS Common Store\database . mdb .

Those two reoccur constantly in the Application Log . Nothing strange in the system log though .

282333 2004-10-18 09:14:00 I have emergency-switched to a different server. We can now work on this at our leisure - (no longer urgent).
