282313 2004-10-18 06:41:00 I recently installed Knoppix 3.3 on my Digital HiNote VP700 series laptop. Everything picks up fine, except for the sound card! I've tried it in other flavours of Linux as well, with no success - the sound card works in Windows though with no problems! It's a Crystal sound chip (I forget which one and I don't have Windows on my laptop ATM so I can't check).

I've tried Googling for it and have used pnpdump and the sound config tool with no success.

Anyone know how to get the sound working?

282314 2004-10-18 06:53:00 Try as root:
cat /proc/pci

Post back with the relevant info on your Soundcard.

BTW - Knoppix-3.6 is out :-)

Chill.

282315 2004-10-18 07:02:00 It only has the Intel chipset, the NeoMagic videocard and the CardBus slot info :S wintertide (1306)
282316 2004-10-18 07:04:00 I'll get Knoppix 3.6 off a workmate... I'm going to play round with PnP settings (again!) to see if I can get it to show. wintertide (1306)
282317 2004-10-18 07:17:00 Try:
sndconfig

as root... Otherwise IIRC there's some sorta a GUI config tool in Knoppix. Have a look around :-)

282318 2004-10-18 07:43:00 I've tried the GUI tool and I just tried sndconfig - says it found no PnP or PCI sound cards :( wintertide (1306)

lspci -vv

282320 2004-10-19 04:20:00 "crystal sound linux" to Google gives mostly old (1997) problems. I see hints that it might be isapnp, rather than pci. But I'd assume that the problems have been fixed ...

Don't forget looking at dmesg | less (or dmesg | grep -i crystal).
