282271 2004-10-18 04:08:00 Hi,

I have a IBM laptop with an OEM version of Windows XP . Now I called the support desk with a problem with my external monitor/video card going back to a 60Hz refresh rate (which I can't stand) occasionally . "Well sir, that sounds more like a Windows problem rather than a hardware problem" . "We don't support software (Windows), only hardware" .

me "But its an OEM version of Windows and you have to contact the hardware supplier" .
helpdesk "Yes but we don't provide software support" .

So when you purchase a pc with an OEM version of Windows, do you purchase any form of Windows support? Have I paid for support I'm not going to get?

The problem is not a major . I just change it back again although Microsoft need to improve the way you change the settings for the inbuilt lcd monitor versus an external monitor (or intel cos its an intel video driver) . I find it very confusing .

Oh, and I purchased an extended warranty for my laptop online but the purchase "got lost in the system", so according to IBM's records, my laptop is out of warranty . Is IBM just too big??

Do you have all the dockets for the online purchase?

If yes, Hey Big Blue, I want my Warranty or my Pennies.

Snail mail, with tracking to: Generall Manager, C/S, Big Blue, AKL.

Should get some positive reaction.

Does this mean you have another monitor hooked up to the laptop?
If so, I don't think you can expect the supplier to be responsible for sorting out any problems not directly related to the unit they sold you.
I would class it as an addon & as such the problem is yours.
I'm not up with OEM support policy but I would have thought it would still be Microsoft who is responsible for OS support OEM or full retail purchase, it's still their product
I stand to be corrected though.

282274 2004-10-18 10:18:00 One of the OEM software conditions is that the vendor is classed as the supplier of the unit and is responcible for all aspects of its suport,MS effictivly passes the buck to whoever sold it.

Full retail copies are supported by MS.

The feature to power an external monitor is a part of the purchased device and should be covered,Thats not to garentee that they have a fix though, your laptop screen with be 60hz by default and i would say the video drivers fall back on that default setting for any external device just to be safe.

Infact,if it was me i would tell you it was a feature to stop you causing damage.....
