282243 2004-10-18 04:36:00 you CANT use a cd-r as a normal floppy cause files once written to it cant be erased.............geez...............cdrw yep but as others have said they are sometimes unreadable on other systems........cd-r's tho can be written to many times untill they are full so long as you use the 'multisession' option.........which is usually a default setting in nero anyway drcspy (146)

282246 2004-10-18 05:48:00 You can't use a CDr as a floppy as it is not erasable, rewriteable. You want CD RW for that. If you format a CD RW in UDF (Universal Disk Format), it will be readable on most machines; just include the UDF reader software on the CD (it's small) and it will install itself as soon as the CD is run.

Direct CD, also known as DLA (Drive Letter Access) will allow you to drag and drop files in Windows explorer to your CD RW.

Be warned that CD RW is known to be troublesome so make a backup for sure. I have had CD RWs become completely unreadable even though the disk itself was in good shape, after reformatting. Vince :-)

Realy? I had no trouble transfering files from my old Win98 computer with Adaptec software to my new XP one with Sonic. Vince :-)

282249 2004-10-19 04:11:00 Really, Vince . I have at least 8 computers which will NOT read any such "drag + drop" "floppy-like" CDs . They will read standard iso9660 CDs . They will read real floppies . You might not approve of the software they run, but that's irrelevant . :D

It's always dangerous to make general statements based on one success .

My general statement is that it's not a good idea to use such clever non-standards if the data might be wanted on other machines . They are fine if they are for backups on the same machine . But as a "quick" way of moving files to another machine, I will always use a standard format .

I saw too many different archiving/compressing formats produced in the 1980s to be impressed with the "new and better" argument . They resulted in huge amounts of new and better confusion . I see rar is being revived . I will stick to pkzip . ;-)

282250 2004-10-20 03:28:00 I didn't mean to be contentious Graham. Sorry if I sounded that way. I was just trying to present a fuller picture for all. Vince :D Vince (406)

That's probably because XP uses Roxio's (Adaptec) burning engine
& even if the XP CD Burning is turned off it would probably still allow you to read the CD
