282907 2004-10-20 05:33:00 Greetings all
I am looking at installing KidPix on an Xp machine, now I have read that it may need to be installed and run in compatibility mode, I think I can do that but how do I share the game so other users can use it, (I have never used XP)
Any searches I do for "Xp program Sharing" come up with file sharing apps etc, I guess I have probably got the terminology wrong

The other thing is how do i install files that don't install, as in programs that are just an exe file you download and they run just like that.

I know there used to be countless howtos years ago but I don't seem to be able to find them

Thanks Nigel

282908 2004-10-20 06:12:00 Hmm dont know about older programs, but newer installers give u the option to make a program useable to u or everyone. Not too sure how u can change that in older programs, unless there's an update for the program, that might fix this.

Most exe files u download are exe install files. Just double click on them to install them. Depends what the exe fle is suppose. I havent seen too many exe files that will run, just like that, soon after u d/l it. Most of them need to be installed, before something will actually work. Either that or whatever exe file you downloaded is corrupted or something.

I may have to just try and see.
thanks

282910 2004-10-20 06:48:00 Well I would scan those exe fiiles before I use them. Emulators like those, PS2, Playstation emulators etc, tend to have things like trojans or similar embedded in them, and running them, will start them off. Spacemannz (808)
282911 2004-10-20 07:44:00 ANY .exe can have nasties embedded, emulators are absolutely no different to any other executable in that regard.

Older programs including those designed for 16 bit systems have no understanding of, or dependence on, the registry. Therefore they just run, they don't need an install before they can be run.

282912 2004-10-20 07:58:00 Try: Start > Run type cmd and at the command prompt type the path to the exe and type enter, on second thought do the last bit straight from run. Have no idea if that will work, but I though XP had a DOS emulator.

282913 2004-10-20 08:32:00 Emulators are slightly different in that they can describe the virus as an xbox or ps2 emulator and no matter how many times the young kids ask if its real and get told its a virus sooner or later they download it and infect their comps.

This practice run rampant on p2p networks, infact i would say if you ran a search for xbox emulators the results would be in the hundreds and each and everyone of them would be a virus of some description.

In light of this if anyone is going to download an emulator its best to research it first, there are no emu's for the ps2 or xbox at this time, everything else is pretty well covered though....Including the gameboy which in its time also had a fair few virus bundled up and offerd as an emulator....
