282841 2004-10-19 23:55:00 I'm trying to run msn messenger on my flash disk at polytech.Unfortunately for the past few days they have somehow I think blocked the port and I can't log on to msn anymore to chat with my father

I know that when i use firefox I type in the following settings

janus.witt.ac.nz
Port: 8080
ID:username
Password: password

I applied to msn messenger/trilian/easy message
but it doesn't work

It used to be able to log on without any setting i only would need to apply the setting when running opera etc.
Does anybody know how i can get it bak and running?

282842 2004-10-20 00:28:00 Whats firefox got to do with MSN messenger?? Are you using a proxy in MSN messenger?? Or r u using some kind of firewall??

You shouldnt have to use a proxy thru Firefox, to use MSN Messenger.

282843 2004-10-20 00:34:00 Ask the polytech helpdesk or system administrators. They will know. If security settings have been changed, they will have done it. They might consider your case for access to chat rooms.

Noone here will know. You might be told about ways of (maybe) "beating the system".

That is a Bad Idea. The polytech computer access is for your course work. System administrators are not amused by attempts to beat the system. The conditions of your account will give warnings about this.

282845 2004-10-20 02:01:00 No the contract doesn't say anything about chat rooms.

If i use firefox/mozilla/opera .I run it from my flashdisk .I have to apply proxy settings.

However when running msn.I didn't have to apply any proxy setting.
They have blocked something and now everybody can't run msn.

I might go ask the technician about this as I need to speak to my dad and supplier!

And its my birthday today:_|

282846 2004-10-20 02:06:00 The contract will certainly say something about trying to beat the security. :D It will mention the consequences: severe.

Don't "might go ask". Go ask.

282847 2004-10-20 02:26:00 Just out of interest, whats your idea of severe?

Whats the worst they can do?,growl?,chop off a finger?,deport him?
metla (154)
282848 2004-10-20 02:34:00 If you need computer access to do course work and your access is withdrawn because of a breach of the terms of use, how do you do the course work?

Severe enough? Certainly expensive .

For overseas students, inability to finish a course might cause withdrawal of permission to stay in the country .

System administrators in educational institutions aren't there to play games . They make reasonable rules to protect the system from idiots, so that all the users can use it . If idiots break the rules, they will be made to regret it . In any computer system, attempts to get around the security settings can be detected . In properly run systems, culprits are nailed .
