2004-10-19 22:56:00 | I have been running the above scanner from new on a Windows XP Professional system with SP1, 512Mb ram, and USB connection, without any problems until about 2-3 months ago. Now when I open Scangear Toolbox and request it to scan, copy or email, I simply get the message Unable to open Twain Server. In Control Panel/Scanners and Cameras, the scanner is recognised correctly and right-clicking and going Properties/Test Scanner, the scanner operates and then gives the message The imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test. I have un-installed the scanner and software several times and then re-installed it, to no effect the Twain Server message is the same. I have downloaded and installed a new driver available on the Canon website, again to no effect. I have spoken to Canon New Zealands technical people, but none of the steps they walked me through (basically steps I had also taken myself as described above) had any effect. They have now suggested I return the scanner to them for checking, but as the diagnostic test Ive already carried out gave a satisfactory result, I dont believe they will find anything wrong with the scanner itself or am I wrong? If anyone has any suggestions as to the cause and/or remedy to this problem, I would be most grateful for their advice, as I use the scanner quite frequently and until the problem surfaced, it had performed extremely well. I look forward to any help you can give. Sincerely Colin Johnson

2004-10-19 23:37:00 | Have u tried scanning thru a graphics program like paintshop/photoshop? Any program that uses Twain / or a scanner (without using Scangear Toolbox)? I use a Canon BUT I dont use the Scangear Toolbox. And the scaner works fine without it.

2004-10-19 23:56:00 | Yes I have. If I go File/Import in Photoshop Pro, the only import options given are "PDF Image" or "WIA Support" - there is no option to import from the scanner. Hence my attempts to use Scangear Toolbox, which used to work well. | Truscott (6299) | |
2004-10-20 00:19:00 | What happens when u select WIA support? That might relate to the scanner.

2004-10-20 01:14:00 | Selecting the WIA option gives the message "No WIA compatible devices were detected. Check your device is plugged in to the computer (it is) and the power is turned on) It is. Prior to the current problem arising, I could import images from the scanner but now it seems Photoshop just can't see the scanner.

2004-10-20 01:26:00 | Hmm ok . If the scanner is USB plug it into another USB port . Or unplug it from the USB port (if it is USB), plug something else into that USB port, (if u have anything else thats USB) . How many USB ports are in use?? (If u use USB) . and do u use a USB hub??

2004-10-20 03:33:00 | Both USB ports on the rear of the computer are in use, one with the keyboard and one to a 4-port hub. I have tried the scanner on each of the 4 ports on the hub with no success, but my digital camera and digital video camera both work beautifully of each of the hub ports, which indicates to me that the hub is OK and hence the USB port on the box, to which it is connected, is OK too. The scanner used to do the same but now things have changed somewhere and the scanner seems not to be recognised, either by Photoshop or by Scangear. I suspect it may be software related but what is the problem. Thanks for all your time and trouble anyway - it is greatly appreciated.

2004-10-20 03:36:00 | Why not let Canon have a look at it? There might be something they know about that model. ;-) | Graham L (2) | |
2004-10-20 04:02:00 | Thanks Graham. It looks like we're coming down to that, although from what I've seen on the tests I've done and from comments I've had from others with whom I've discussed the problem, I'm inclined to think it is software related. | Truscott (6299) | |
2004-10-20 04:07:00 | Has this scanner got a locking mechanism, or something on the bottom of it? Like the D646U I have, it has a diagram of a padlock locked/unlocked underneath the scanner . Some Canon scanners do to prevent them from being damaged during transit . Someone MAY have flicked it or switched it over, so the scanner doesnt operate properly .
