282686 2004-10-19 10:42:00 This is very odd:

On my brand new PC, Celeron D 2.4GHZ, Foxconn motherboard, 512 ddr400 ram, when I do certain software actions the CPU fan speed changes.

For example, when scrolling in PressF1 using the wheel, the fan goes at a lower pitch. When holding down the button in Adobe Reader, same thing.

But when clicking outside of acrobat the fan does not change. Likewise, scrolling in acrobat with the scroll wheel doesn't affect the RPM.

It is not very significant, but definitely noticable. What on earth could cause such a thing? If it helps:

Foxconn 661FX4MR-ES is the Motherboard model
SiS661FX + 963L is the chipset

Celeron D Prescott processor (533MHZ, 2.4GHZ, 256KB cache)
300W psu, 40GB hdd (5400rpm), DVD-ROM, floppy

Cheers

282687 2004-10-19 19:47:00 Check for the geek talk equivelent off a "Load/Temp Sensor" this is what behaviour you are describing.

If you have windows task manager open on cpu memory load tab when you do this, you will see a 100% or near CPU load = heat = fan rpm increase to make cool.

282688 2004-10-19 20:02:00 There is the possibility thet the load of the cpu is stealing power from the fan supply, so slowing it down, but i think even the cheap boards have gone past this error now.

Never forgey ears, nose, eyes and carefully applied fingers, are frequently the best impending problem warning tools, never neglect or completely ignore them

They who have never asked a stupid question, have probably learnt little.

They who haver never made a mistake, have invariable made very very little.

(Should that be whom? damm P.C.)

282689 2004-10-20 03:23:00 That would make sense ... but the speed goes down...

It doesn't seem to be directly related to cpu either, but it always happens when scrolling (in any way) in ie. Also happens when opening menus in All Programs that I haven't been into before (ie. not cached in RAM). BUT it is not linked to HDD activity, I know that much.

When I play music (steady 7-10% CPU usage) there is no difference to the rpm while idle ("0%" cpu usage). However it does momentarily go down while pressing the play button.

What a strange thing...

282690 2004-10-20 04:38:00 George,

Is the mouse usb or ps2?

Is the PSU big enough?

282691 2004-10-20 04:44:00 Is it just when scrolling or does it happen when you increase the CPU's workload? Pete O'Neil (250)
282692 2004-10-20 05:27:00 Just certain actions. It's always for a brief moment. And no, CPU workload isn't it. I can encode video at 100% cpu, and make no difference to fan speed (well, it goes up after a min or so but that's unrelated). george12 (7)
282693 2004-10-20 05:46:00 Most likely explanation (just using simple logic) would be that the fan speed control is using the same IRQ as the mouse. godfather (25)
282694 2004-10-20 05:53:00 > . . . changes in pitch when mouse button held down

You probably would too ;)

282695 2004-10-20 06:43:00 It seems not to have an IRQ. Also, it is only in certain programs etc. george12 (7)
