My son bought a Canon S400 while overseas and after taking approx 75 pictures, the camera would not display them and thinks there are no images on the 128MB SD card (Toshiba). I initially suspected that he mistakenly pressed the wrong button due to unfamiliarity with the options. I took the camera to a photo shop on his return and they were able to retrieve about 2/3 of the images successfully into CD which I uploaded into my HD. The rest are there but would not display fully ie. only 10-25% of the whole frame would show up. These image files are viewable as thumbnails though. Editing the corrupt images in Adobe Photoshop would fail with a "the jpeg marker segment length too short" error. Any clues?

The photoshop suggested that I reformat the card. I would like to salvage the images first before doing so.

Thanks
Tom

282637 2004-10-19 08:57:00 Could be that your son turned the camera off before it had completed saving the image to the card. I know with my Canon S45 if you take a shot and turn the camera off by mistake before it has finished it will corrupt the data on the card. I don't know how you could edit the images and repair them but I use a program called Photo Rescue to recover deleted and damaged files. It doesn't repair all damaged files but may recover some. Luckily I haven't had to use it much. You can find it here (www.datarescue.com)

282638 2004-10-19 09:00:00 If you have a card reader, you could try one of the image recovery programs here www.pricelesswarehome.org

The freeware Digital Image Recovery 1.47 by Alexander Grau would be a good start.

The thumbnails are a separate image in the file. Having a thumbnail doesn't mean that the main image will be any good.

Also try other viewers like Irfanview just in case.

Premature powering down sounds a likely reason - the pictures do look like the camera was interrupted during save. I have been to Steve's Digicam site and read the review (it's a Canon PowerShot A400 by the way - sorry about the haste) and he/they did not mention any issues. Oh well, live and learn.

I'm off to check the links you've provided and will get back with the results (crossed fingers).

Best regards
