282628 2004-10-19 06:09:00 i looked around and chose ipcop and smoothwall to run on my old 150Mhz
is there any major differences between these two that would make me choose one over the other?

comments from people who are using these would be very helpful..
thanx

282629 2004-10-19 06:38:00 Smoothwall and IPCOP have roots back in smoothwall.

Back when Smoothwall was being developed (GPL only not GPL and Commercial), some of the junior programmers had an arguement with the older ones and split off - given the GPL nature of linux they took the code with them and renamed it to IPCOP.
Since then they've gone down their own path but had the same idea in mind - Linux firewall which is easy to control and hard to get around.

While there are both positive and negative criticisms for both the choice is yours at the end of the day. Usually the arguments are based on smoothwalls ex-lead programmer being a rude tard that deserved to, well nevermind (more reading here (www.linux.net.nz)) and other argument for IPCop is that it is a direct port of smoothwall and the first IPCop release was smoothwall with all the logo's changed around and whatnot.

Having used both they're both reasonably good in what they do, the web based setup is great for controlling the system but at the end of the day they're one in the same - so if you find one easy you already know about the other one

282630 2004-10-19 18:13:00 m0n0 is BSD-Based and looks good :-)

FreeSCO is supposed to be good too! Its Linux.... The SCO Part = Cisco, so its clean :D

282631 2004-10-22 06:48:00 The main difference between the two (apart from ipcop having a much cheesier UI, though it's much improved now) was that ipcop was very mod friendly...

With the departure of dick morrell, Smoothwall has become a lot more mod friendly now:
community.smoothwall.org

And the cream of the modifications have their own site here:
sourceforge.net

Though in saying that, these two do have a messy history and a fiery relationship between the two userbases, so if I was looking elsewhere, I'd go with m0n0, which even Dick Morrell has made positive rumblings about...

The whole thing about that nzlug thing was that dick morrell comes from a very solid security background - a security appliance is exactly that. Don't install uneccessary stuff on it because that could open up holes and make maintenance more trouble than it's worth. The general gist was "if you want just a firewall appliance, use smoothwall. if you want a fully functional but not *as secure* firewall, use clarkconnect" The main problem with dick was that he was very stubborn with his ideals and reinforced those ideals like an absolute prat.

The person who started the whole mess in the nzlug guy's story had obviously not read the smoothwall documentation, which at the time was heresy. The documentation of the time had an extensive section that basically said "you can freely modify smoothwall but we wont support it. Dont ask us for help if you create or use a modified version" That's what dick was taking offence to, but as I said.. his delivery was often less than appropriate

In the meantime though, I'm a happy Smoothwall user
