2005-02-15 22:13:00 | Hey TruScott, I had the same problem with my Canon LiDE 20. During email support, a canon tech told me to create a new Admin account and my scanner works from there. I guess somehow my old admin account was corrupted somehow. I still have the old account for IE favorites and stuff. i just log in different when I want to scan something. Hope this helps.

2005-05-07 21:17:00 | I have also a Canon N670U and its only power supply is the USB cable . I have 2 PCs both with WinXP SP2, but 2 different brands of motherboards: One low cost PC, as discount photo chains use to sell as so called special offers with a generic MSI . Another PC, bought at a regular price with a genuine ASUS . The first (cheap) one has the same problem with the "TWAIN Source" The second (more expensive) one scans in trouble free  I have learned from photography-on-the . net ( . net/forum/showthread . php?t=1594" target="_blank">photography-on-the . net) that not all motherboards supply enough electric current to power the N670U suffiently . If you have only an electrically weak motherboard, you can try (according to that source) to link the N670 to your PC via an USB hub with it's own power supply .

2006-03-15 23:56:00 | Hi All, I found this thread based on a search for "ScanGear CS error:201". I tried much of everything mentioned here except for a reinstall. I tried uninstalling with the Canon tool, manually cleaning the registry, etc. I tried using another user and that also did not work. I went back to the original USB cable that came with the Canon 8400F and it worked immediately. It has a iron block near each connector. I went back and tried two generic cables, 1 with only one iron block and another with no iron blocks and it gave me the error message again. I hope for some of you this will help the problem. Regards.

2006-03-16 00:13:00 | Welcome to PressF1 . The "iron" blocks are ferrite and are there to reduce the amount of RF noise radiated by the cable . They should not have any effect on the functioning of the scanner . ;) It looks as if the Canon cable is a better one than the generic ones . It might have larger power wires, so has less voltage drop . (The current surge when the scan motor starts is probably the culprit) . Why not just use the Canon cable? Then there isn't any problem . If you have some reason not to, use the shortest possible "generic" cable, or look for another "name" cable . (USB cables often have the wire gauges marked on them . Look for "24 SWG" for the power pair at least; smaller numbers=bigger wire) . A USB 2 . 0 should have 24 gauge, I think . Another possible solution would be a USB hub with its own power supply . Though that might not be a solution -- it will supply only 5V, too, and it looks as if it's a cable problem, rather than the computer power . :D

2006-03-16 14:30:00 | Thanks for the additional info . I will look for the gauge indicator next time . Maybe an 8 gauge wire from Monster Cable would do the trick . This 8400F model is powered externally but I don't get any problems until I try to initiate a scan which is when the power surge you mentioned would probably happen . I agree it probably has everything to do with the cable . The ferrite beads are for reducing interference as you, pardon me I forgot everything I should have learned in electrical engineering last night . :waughh: The cable I was using was longer since I had the scanner (rarely used) quite a distance from the computer . The cable was a 'name brand' with those fancy 'gold' plated connectors . The only clue I had to try the cable swap was the Canon website that insisted that I use the 'supplied' cable . Anyway, that saved me from reinstalling my OS and still seeing the problem . :badpc:

Regards. Hi, Here's one possible solution. I faced a somewhat similar problem i.e. "unable to locate TWAIN driver". I am running windows XP SP2. Out of frustration, I uninstalled the driver (which was downloaded from the cannon website - www.canon-asia.com) with the uninstall program on the same site (for this driver), connected the scanner back to the USB port and got windows to detect the driver and install the driver instead. Viola, the problem disappeared and I am able to scan again! Don't ask me why this worked. I have no explanation. I hope this works for you. |

2006-03-26 23:14:00 | Hi There Just to add if it hasn't been said. I have the same scanner which is a pain when it doesn't work but is great when it does. first of all it has a mind of it's own some say it works well on 98 2nd edition I spent weeks trying to get it to work then suddenly it worked for no apparent reason. I then got xp and it worked straight away. it worked for me this way Remove any trace of canon or caere applications try using reg cleaner or similar program Plug in scanner usb lead and wait to be told next step, follow instructions and xp will ask to insert cd for driver. If the software is installed first it will not work.Sorry if this sounds patronising but I have been through the same problems and repetition was the only way it worked. It is a great scanner, I thought it was faulty but after weeks of trying it worked but follow what I have said to the letter, do not install the software first and let xp find the new device and ask you to insert the disk if you have one
