282663 2004-10-26 07:45:00 Thanks Pete for the advice. I've just looked into Pricespy with a view to the CPU/Mobo combo you suggested, and could get, through pp.co.nz, the following:

AMD Semperon (754) 3100+ (w/ HSF) $223.00
GA-K8NS Pro $196.

I've already bought the GFX - GeCube ATI 98900Pro 128MB - $396

That just leaves the HDD/RAM
512MB Transcend DDR400 $188
Seagate 160GB SATA $182

Total Cost $1185

The only question is regarding the Mobo. If it's 64Bit, but the CPU isn't, will that be a problem, or will it just step down, or up, accordingly.
Also, in terms of installation, are the Semperon/AMD64 CPU's any different in installation (thermal tape, paste-wise)?

Cheers,
Lizard

282664 2004-10-26 08:57:00 Not sure if your willing to buy online, however, the Transcend DDR400 512Mb ram can be purchased here from Eden Computers (www.edencomputers.co.nz)

They are in Auckland though...

Nope wont be a problem, the sempron 3100+ has the exact same specs as the Athlon64 2800+, except it isnt 64bit compatiable. Seeing as currently the only OS that support 64bit is Linux means if your running Windows you wont see any difference in performance.

Its not different to installing a P4, like the P4 the skt 754 Athlon have a ceramic heatspreader. Its easier to install than the AthlonXP as there is less chance of damaging the chip. If your worried about installion have a read of the artic silver website. As long as you buy a retail chip it will come with a suitable cooler and thermal pad/TIM.

282666 2004-10-26 23:58:00 Need to do more homework on K8NS-pro.I know several people who have this MoBo and it appears to have a few issues with more than 1 stick of ram(in some cases it runs slower with more ram).I,too,am looking to build a 64bit machine with a view to setting it up as an HTPC(Home Theatre PC).I have settled on AMD64 3000+ as it represents(in my opinion anyway)better performance for my money, but the Motherboard is still being researched(I'm looking for 1600mhz fsb, decent on-board sound,built-in firewire, serial ata,and so on and so on) Bigballz (5350)

If your budget is a bit more robust than the original posters consider either the DFI nF3 250Gb or MSI K8N Neo Platinum both are very good. The DFI overclocks like a crazy dog on speed, ive seen numerous websites that have hit 300MHz+ FSB's. The MSI is also a good overclocker and comes with the Realtek ALC850 chipset which is probably the best audio solution avaliable for AMD now that soundstorm is dead.

If you building a HTPC i would serious reckonmend going back to socket A and getting a nForce2 motherboard with the MCP-T, the addition of soundstorm is well worth the small loss of performance. Its not like you need top of the line performance for a HTPC.
