2004-10-20 08:51:00 | Ok I know this topic has come up over and over and over again... However my question is which type of each card would be a recommended purchase.... so essentially what I want to know is... Which GeForce 6800 card should I purchase (If the nVidia is the card to get?) OR Which Radeon X800 card should I purchase (If the ATi card is the one to get?) So what I'm after is do I buy the EXTREME, GAMER, OR ULTRA editions etc of these cards? cheers chiefnz

2004-10-20 19:20:00 | If yourgo ATi then get ATI X800XT PE If your going nVidia then get a 6800 UTRA Things to think about: nVidia usaly beats ATi in OpenGL Games ATi is good for DX eg Hl2 nVidia has better drives ATi X800XT PE does much better then 6800U in big screen res But its all up to you as we don't know what you use your computer to do.

2004-10-20 21:18:00 | You need to be a bit more specific, what games do you want to play? What are the specs of the rest of the PC? There no point putting a $1000 card into a Celeron system. The X800XT PE and the 6800 EE are pretty much impossible to find even in America, if you could get one for $1500 consider it a good deal. nVidia is supposively claiming that the Extreme never existed. The 6800GT seems to be the sweet spot at the moment it offers good performance but wont completly blow the bank. Its also pretty easy to overclock it to ultra specs.

2004-10-20 21:57:00 | im going to get burned for this from loyal PCworld fans. but get the latest Atomic mag. it tests and benchamarks the X800 and the 6800. of course the 6800 comes out on top. but they show you which brand is the best. Cheers

2004-10-21 02:59:00 | Primary use of the PC is basically graphics design (3D), video editing... my home movies and gaming. system specs currently: P4 prescott 2.8Ghz (running at 3.4Ghz approx) 1GB DDR 400 RAM 9600XT (600/325) 2 x 120GB Seagate SATA drives Keen on having hardware to play Halflife 2... Doom 3 currently runs alright so it's just to ensure I can play Halflife 2 when it is released. thanks for your comments.. any more woul dbe appreciated cheers chiefnz

2004-10-21 05:13:00 | It might be a good idea to crack open the magical google, do a lil search for X800 benchmarks, any semi decent review site will benchmark it againist a 6800. Then decide which card offers performance that you deem acceptable, then crack open the equally magical pricespy and find which card suits your budget. (Hint Hint both the X800PRO and 6800GT offer a good compromise between price and performance). It also might be an idea to keep in mind the 9800PRO, if you feel that your 9600XT offers decent performance then the 9800PRO will be like life on P.

2004-10-21 08:36:00 | Hi Chiefnz, As Pete has suggested check out some sites that do comparative reviews like anandtech (www.anandtech.com) and tomshardware (http:) to see what they say. From what I have read the X800pro seems to perform as well if not better than a 6800 Ultra in all but the Doom 3 tests. So depending on your budget you should possibly look at a X800pro, especially as they are priced around the same mark as a 6800GT. One thing I have heard though is that ATi do seem to be having a few problems with the drivers for the X800 series, but what fun is computing without a few problems ;) HTH :)

2004-10-21 18:55:00 | well i personally have a 6800gt so i really must pimp that :p but if you are inot video editing then the 6800/6600 series might be the way to go because of the inbuilt video encoding/decoding chip and that special little thing called the motion estimation engine which supposedly can help to fix bad image quality and dropped frames. buut in the end it all just comes down to personal preference
