283267 2004-10-21 04:52:00 is there any significant difference in quality between a mp3 ripped at 160kbps (CBR) and at 160kbps (VBR)?
will there be much of a difference in file size?

Ppl say no, but you should be able to tell by comparing them side by side.

Ripping at 160kbps VBR is not enough info. Does this mean the average of the file is 160kbps? Or is the max bitrate set at 160kbps.

If it was ripped with a resulting file size of approx 160kbps, this may mean there are parts of the file which require higher bitrates encoded, which will mean better sound over those parts.

Therefore, the 160kbps VBR should sound better than the 160kbps CBR.

VBR files should result in a smaller file I think? Though the size will be neglible.

283269 2004-10-21 05:29:00 VBR uses the same amout of data overall,it just uses less when it can get away with it and distributes them elsewhere in the file,...personally can't see any use for it in mp3's and they dont play on a lot of stand alone equipment. metla (154)
283270 2004-10-21 08:15:00 a 160 vbr will have a far smaller file size for the same sound quality than a 160 cbr. it will vary a bit depending on what codec is used.

personally i always use VBR or use ogg instead of mp3.

Thats interesting,Looks like it does have a positive reason to be then. You also mention codec,Can't say i have ever delved into mp3 codecs, what are available and whats recomended?

283272 2004-10-21 09:18:00 Fraunhofer, Lame or Xing are the weapons of choice.

Typically it's Fraunhofer vs Lame.

283273 2004-10-21 09:27:00 MusicMatch Jukebox help has this to say on the subject.

MP3 VBR - Variable Bit Rate encoding is an encoding method that ensures consistently high audio quality throughout an encoded file by making decisions on recording quality based on audio complexity.

Use VBR encoding when consistent audio quality is the top priority and predictable MP3 file size is not critical.

Choose a VBR setting from 1 to 100, low end being the lowest quality/highest compression and high end being the highest quality/lowest compression, to customize your recording.

Variable Bit Rate encoded files may be larger than Constant Bit Rate encoded files.

283274 2004-10-21 09:33:00 there are heaps of codecs from the hacked Fraunhofer to open sorce. lame (when correctly set up) would have to be one of the best.

personally i prefer ogg, its easier to use and get good quality vers size. but there are not many hardware players for it.

283276 2004-10-22 03:31:00 I find Audiograbber to be one of the best Cd ripper, especially now that its free. CDex is also very good but i prefer Audiograbber. Pete O'Neil (250)
