283206 2004-10-20 23:02:00 I would keep the P3. metla (154)
283207 2004-10-20 23:22:00 Metla,

Unfortunatly, that was my feeling, with out checking all the numbers .

(Lazy S . O . B . )

Those K6s are still a nice, but dated CPU .

Its to be a Christmas toy for a 5 and a bit year old .

Thank you,

D .

283208 2004-10-20 23:23:00 Did you benchmark them? If i had to make a choice on the spot i would have also taken the P3. Pete O'Neil (250)
283209 2004-10-20 23:35:00 Peter,

Thank you, no its just gennerall . it's not for anything critical . see above .

With out dooing the # I think the p3 gets it in the cache

Ill Give it 768-133ram so that will help .

Ill keep my eye out for a P4 board @2 with sd ram for 18 months time .

283210 2004-10-20 23:42:00 the k6-2 is a budget cpu, competes nicly against the celeron but is totaly out performed by the p2 and p3.

>Ill keep my eye out for a P4 board @2 with sd ram for 18 months time

i wouldn't bother. the early p4 with sdram where poor performers, a p3 system could run as quick if not faster.

Its hard enough trying to find a semi decent SD-RAM P4 motherboard at the moment, in 18months time it'll be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. But hopefully in 18months time AMD will have settled on what socket they plan to use and they'll be some nice cheap Semprons floating around or if your an intel man then some nice cheap LGA775 Cellery's.

283212 2004-10-21 00:14:00 yea. the AMD's sucked big time back then. go with the Pentium. Jams (1051)
283213 2004-10-21 01:51:00 I would think it depends on other things like motherboard etc. I never buy hardware without considering future upgrading. A mobo that supports a K6 CPU is unlikely to take anything faster than 550mhz, I don't think K6s went any faster than that. A 500mhz PIII, on the other hand is probably upgradable simply because 500mhz was the slowest (correct me if I'm wrong) PIII made and the mobo should support something quite a bit faster. 283214 2004-10-21 01:53:00 Only beause you asked, the first p3 was a 450,though i do believe the p2 went as far as 500mhz as well. metla (154)
