283099 2004-10-20 21:17:00 I have a 4 year old PC running Win ME (Pentium 900GHz processor, 192MB RAM) which has recently started running slower than a wet week (it's very slow to start up and opening programmes such as Word, Excel etc takes approx 60 seconds whereas before it was instant).

I have a firewall installed and regularly perform virus and spyware checks so I'm fairly confident it doesn't have a virus.

Last night I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled the o/s and windows ... with the same result, it's still as slow as before.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem?

283100 2004-10-20 22:15:00 Have you got anything else besides Windows ME? Spacemannz (808)
283101 2004-10-20 22:18:00 If you've formatted the harddrive then it sounds like it maybe a hardware problem. Has anyone had the case open? or been into the BIOS? Pete O'Neil (250)
283102 2004-10-20 22:42:00 No - the last time the case was open was 2 years ago when I put in more RAM. The reason I thought it was a software problem was because when I start it in safe mode, it runs at normal speed. It's darned annoying - lol. scarlettnz (2239)
283103 2004-10-20 22:43:00 Umm, I might have a version of 98 kicking around somewhere. Why? scarlettnz (2239)
283104 2004-10-20 23:24:00 900Ghz!!? Wow, can I buy that from you? :p

Have you tried defragmenting the hard drive?

283105 2004-10-21 04:24:00 How much memory does it think it's got now? Memory does occasionally fail. If you've now got 64MB, it might be a bit slower. :D Graham L (2)
283106 2004-10-21 04:28:00 if you have formatted shouldnt all your software problems be gone?
my guess is that one of the ram sticks is stuffed and that its only running on 64 or 128mb???
