I'm interested in your criticism of Xtra's spam filter, as I've found it successful.
Apart from one bad dose of Microsoft fakes & "undelivered mail" garbage before they began filtering, I get very little spam.
(PressF1 taught me in early days on the Internet how NOT to acquire it)
But the ocasional one which arrives is immediately forwarded to Xtra's spamreport - and never appears again.
You speak of 80 a day from the US via Xtra.
Obviously it wasn't that ISP's fault someone got your email address So what did you do to let them fix it?
If you forwarded them to their spamreport, did that not work? That's how they add to their filter, after all, to keep us all clear. It has worked so far for me.
If you merely changed to a software option without using spamreport, it's hardly fair to blame Xtra for emails not identified as spam.
I ask because I've had confidence so far in the filter - provided that new rubbish is reported.
If spamreport isn't working. I'd like to know..

283476 2004-10-22 21:22:00 Hi Laura, and the rest,

Yes xtra do not have the perfect answer- as I said I re checked to make sure xtra was set up and it was--- the spam report could not know what was new, legitimate e mail.

however I might point out that all the e mails that come in from the States are technically legal ( address and all are correct) whereas in xtra they could not know what is illegal if correctly addressed.
re the bouncing-- in the filter side tag/button,I type in "not to me" and it autmatically bounces everything that does not show in my imported from Outlook Express, address book.

It goes further- if, say you, Laura had e mailed me-to my xtra address, Mailwasher would bounce and delete unless I watch the incoming and hurriedly untick the "bounce-delete" squares, before clicking "process mail"

Finally, the free version does not come near the pro one- as I tried it out initially, saw the potential but was less than impressed with what it could not do , automatically as does the Pro version, and which does all the work for you

283477 2004-10-22 22:00:00 I use Mail washer Pro, and started after the first of the major Mydoom?? worm problems. All my email addresses were harvested from people I had corresponded with (not from here, I am well protected by multiple electronic condoms and nothing has got through in years) and at the peak I was getting hundreds of virus and spam messages a day.

Mail washer screens all mail on six accounts and has never flagged a genuine message. About five a week are not picked and I have to tell MW they are spam, but I get well over 200 emails a week so a 2.5% failure rate is not bad. Not with a 100% success rate on wanted mail.

I delete all spam from the server and even some wanted emails when it is just a short message that I don't need to keep. Being able to reply to emails direct from MW is also a great help.

I thoroughly recommend it.

Cheers
