============================================

My question as a 3Gb Jetstream customer...will this speed increase also apply to us??

Or, is it just for the $70 a month paying Flat rate plans?

============================================

My letter from Telecom says that they will remove the excess user charges so I can exceed 3Gb (I don't get near the data cap at the moment so this means no improvement for me).

If I go over the 3Gb data cap they say my connection speed will reduce to a max 64kbs (dial up speed) for the rest of the month.

Oh, and for this extremely dubious benefit, the name of my plan changes from JetStream Surf to "JetStream Explorer".

How generous of them...

Well I am on JetStart at the moment before I change over and my billing period ended on the 21st. On the night of the 21st at 10pm I had used 8.8GB of the 10GB per month (Paradise said I used 4.6GB). My PC was shut down and only the modem/router was left connected. When I turned the PC on at 4am next morning I thought it would be interesting to see if I had used anything. Imagine my surprise when it said I had used 5.4GB in 4 hours on a 128/128 connection. Had to go to work but sent them an e-mail from work. When I got home at 6pm I checked again and it was down to 50MB which is what it should have been.
Something really strange goes on with Telecoms usage meter.

Big John, are you suggesting that these new plans may be rate limited more often than people expect because the usage meter is out of whack with the actual data usage? If this was so, would there not be a valid case (or cases) to take to the applicable authorities?

Another question is, why is it so far out or, more precisely how? I know they count unrequested data and general noise and the difference between counting in 1000 lots as opposed to 1024 lots (MB) but what you have experienced is huge . How many people would not question it like you did, most users, I suspect, wouldn't have a clue . Doe this usage discrepancy happen with other providers?

283169 2004-10-23 08:00:00 Regarding the telecom useage meter. I have watchdog as an ISP, and they say I use about 300mb a month (full jetstream), but the telecom useage meter gives me readings over 900mb. Most of the readings are above the 1gb a month limit for my plan, and that is what I am charged with, even though my ISP says we use 300mb.

All I do really, is browse the internet, get emails, and the occasional windows update.

Then last month, I downloaded lots of stuff, and played a few online games, and telecom said I only used 600mb, so I went and downloaded a lot more stuff, untill I couldnt think of anything else to download. I used 980mb that month, which is under the cap.

I just find it odd.

I am saying that what Paradise says I use and what I think I use is about 2 . 5 times less than what the JetStream meter says I use . They always respond saying that it is Paradise who is wrong but Telecoms meter does not give details like Paradises does . There is also the fact that I suddenly had nearly 50% usage in 4 hours on a 128/128Kb connection which after another 12 hours came back into line where it should have been approximately .

I know they count all other data as well which includes headers and if someone happens to do a DOS attack on your IP address it will get charged to your usage . Maybe time to rethink that 24/7 connection and set it for connect when required and disconnect after no data for xx minutes .

283171 2004-10-24 00:37:00 Actually just got a call from Telecom Jetstream this morning esponding to my e-mail. Said he could explain things over the phone better than in an e-mail.

Basically said that usually in the early hours of the morning the system was doing housekeeping and fixing up errors in the database that may have occurred during the previous 24 hours. This happens between 1am and 5am and is why I saw what i did.
Also they dont really monitor people of JetStart plans with other ISP's that well because they are not charging for it so don't need to worry and that if I went to the 2GB plan through them then it would be working 100% accurately except for the small time in the morning when it could be out of whack for a while.

Also said that the bandwidth throttling is now working and they can cut the speeds back once people go over their usage but said they do not do it all the time. You may get away with it one month and be cut back the next and so on.

Interesting talk and nice of them to call back. Service at last.

283172 2004-10-24 01:01:00 I love Telecom.

I'm soooo glad that they are completely willingly upgrading their service for the benefit of all.

283173 2004-10-24 03:49:00 Great, now all we need is for PressF1 to get up to speed, you may as well have a 1200 baud modem, it's the slowest web site in history. Dak2 (1963)

Yes, I think they need a few raided SCSI drives. The time to access a record or thread might be due to slow disk access.

I'm on Jetstream Home 1000 and I had to ring them up to get them to change me onto the Jetstream Plus plan (2m/192/10Gb/throttled to 64k). So after explaining my story four times and being forwarded onto the "correct" department I somehow got to Xtra Jetstream helpdesk. Nope I'm not with Xtra, still not the right place, but that guy forwarded me onto the right person and another 10mins later he had it all fixed up. I'll be on the new plan on the 26th of this month, right after out billing cycle finishes tomorrow. Ahh the timing :)

Apparently you couldn't opt in or change to the new plans until the 24th, so today was the day for doing that stuff.

If you're not with Xtra as ISP and your plan doesn't change over to the new ones automatically then you can ring: 0800 225 598 then pick option 1 twice. That should get you through to the right people quicker. If you are still on any of the old Home fullspeed plans, get your phone into action!

283175 2004-10-24 06:04:00 Hate to burst your bubble Alpha . . . or maybe it's going to be the other way around .

I saw the 'news release' from Xtra a while back, went and changed over to the Swift account this morning via the web and got an e-mail confirming that the new plan would be in action from 24th November! (my billing cycle ends 24th of the month)

I phoned Xtra at 9am this morning and they confirmed that I will not get the new plan for one whole month . Apparently if my billing cycle ended on say the 30th I'd get it almost straight away . The person on the 'help desk' said more or less 'tough bikkies' so I told him I wanted to talk to a team leader . . . took my number and still waiting so phoned back this evening and got the same answer . In fact the guy on the phone said clearly that if your billing cycle ends/starts 26th of this month you will not get the new plan for 1 month .

He also told me that they had not been very clear about the change over delays in the press release . . . no apology forthcoming .

All I can say is good ol' Telecom/Xtra

and sorry if I burst anyone's bubbles . . . blame Xtra
