284064 2004-10-24 03:16:00 h guys :) i wrote in some time ago about what i needed for video capture..thanx for all ur help
went to dick smiths the other day and told them i wanted a video capture card so i could get videos into my pc and then burn them to dvd. the assistant told me they had no cards in stock but he sold me a video capture adaptor (XH3371)...did he sell me the right thing or should i have stuck out for a card? i cannot get any joy at all trying to get video into my pc :( also in the manual it says to check if i have USB root hub and USB enhanced host controller in device manager.... i have 3 usb Root Hubs but not a usb enhanced host controller but i do have a standard enhanced PCI to USB host controller which i would presume isnt what i need? so how do i get one of the usb enhanced host controller things? i have 4 usb ports on my pc..but only 1 seems to work...think i am in desperate need of help with this one :)
thanx in advance

284065 2004-10-24 04:00:00 Hi Shione83. It appears that what he has sold you is the right thing, and it should work.

What version of Windows are you running?

284066 2004-10-24 05:10:00 sorry ...am running XP with service pack2 ....526 ram.... amd athlon 2600+ ...hope that helps :) Shione83 (3380)
284067 2004-10-24 05:18:00 Hmm enhanced USB usually means USB 2. If this doesnt appear in Device Manager, then u have 1.1, Which u cant update, unless your system has USB 2 ports on it, or you get a PCI USB card. You could still use that capture card, BUT if your system only has USB 1.1, then it wont run as fast as it should. You MIGHT have USB 2 if one entry says standard enhanced PCI to USB host controller.

Have u got anything else thats USB2?? Besides this capture card, if you brought it.

284068 2004-10-24 06:17:00 ok just found the specs for my pc..... i have a 7 in 1 card read writer which has a usb2.0 port ..the other usb ports r not usb 2.0....so much for honest salespersons..... but still cant get anything to happen when i connect the video capture adaptor...which isn't a card but an external thing.

284070 2004-10-24 06:31:00 Check through the list of system requirements:

System requirements:
P4 ⁄ Athlon 1.4GHz CPU for MPEG I recording
P4 ⁄ Athlon 1.8GHz for MPEG II & MPEG IV recording
One available USB 2.0 port (you MUST have a fully working USB 2.0 port)
128MB of system memory (512MB is recommended)
Microsoft Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP
Microsoft DirectX 9 installed
DivX MPEG IV codec installed for MPEG IV recording
Overlay supported display
Sound card & speakers

I plead ignorance about what an overlay supported display means :(

284071 2004-10-24 07:18:00 well i have all that! well apart from not knowing what overlay supported display is...but then i aint alone on that one am i ?? my processor is 1.91GHz apparently ...and how do u tell if ur usb2.0 is fully working?? i would have thought it either works or it doesnt?
really do think i have bitten off more than i can chew thhis time

284072 2004-10-24 07:39:00 Does Windows say it has detected a device if you "hot" plug the adapter into the USB port?

Does Device Manager show the adapter in the USB Controller entries after plugging it it?

Device Manager should show a PCI to USB Enhanced Controller, if not there may be motherboard drivers that need installing.

That's all I can think of at the moment, but maybe someone can explain the detail of what an overlay supported display is.

284073 2004-10-24 08:36:00 For the money, you could have bought a TV PCI card ($98) and these include a video capture facility, but these are in short supply at DSE as well ...

An overlay supported display is a graphics chip that allows direct hardware access by the video stream, using the graphics hardware and not software to manipulate the image, or that is my interpretation. I stand to be corrected.
