283852 2004-10-23 08:35:00 Hey guys,

I'm looking at a AMD 2400+ Mobile, 256DDR, 30GB, DVD/CD-RW, 15" ...etc. Notebook (yes, guys, I'm looking at AMD :8})

I would like to know how those fast those kind of specifications would be? Would anyone be able to translate 2400+ Mobile into like a Pentium 4 speed? Is it as fast as a P4 2.4 533Mhz Northwood? As you all know, I am not a gamer. Just need it for homework, web, etc. Reason for getting portable...? Because I'd love to take my PC round the house whereever I want... currently stuck in bedroom :(

Hence, I will be using wireless 802.11g later on too!

Cheers,

283856 2004-10-24 22:12:00 IF you want to be portable you'd be better getting a laptop based on the Centrino, you'll get far better battery life and they are considerably lighter. Mobile Athlon should perform as well as the 2.4GHz P4 with a 533FSB possible even better as in the desktop form Intel didnt start to whoop the Athlon until the FSB hit 800MHz. Pete O'Neil (250)
283857 2004-10-24 23:01:00 I agree, go for a Centrino if you can.

The extra cache gives performance above what you expect with the lower clock speed, the extended battery life and lower heat dissapation are good characteristics.

283858 2004-10-24 23:14:00 Thanks heaps Pete and godfather .

I have no intention of going portable . Just the odd moving-around-the-house type of thing . I don't think there would be much chances of me taking it outside until when I hit university .

Why I am considering a laptop? Because I have already planned for a new PC, this year end at latest . I am approaching uni, and laptop would be vital for me then . Thus, buying a PC now, and then another one in 2 (or even one if I go early) years would be hurting my pockets :( Plus, this one is only $1280 incl GST . Not a typo, its a special! :)

I have being advised to leave the batteries out of the lappie until then, powering up using just the mains . I have to make a decision before this afternoon .

So would the battery 'break down' even if its not being used and sits there for another 2 . 5 years at maximum?

Cheers,

283860 2004-10-24 23:16:00 By the way, would 256mb be enough for me? Just word-processing, net, etc. Occasionally uploading photos from digital camera. Thats all....

Or would I need to budget for another 256mb too?

283861 2004-10-24 23:20:00 For $1200 bucks you can't go wrong,i would suggest you jump on it before someone else does.

Personally i would leave the battery in it,and unplug from the mains from time to time to cycle the battery.

Centrino which is out of your price range is no great loss,They aren't particlary powerful...and unless you have some sort of muscle wasting disease i fail to see the advantage of being a kg lighter, certainly not for the added cost.......
