| 283906 | 2004-10-24 07:58:00 | >I already have 2 network cards in my main computer, one connects to my wireless AP & the other to my wireless internet service interface unit. So to use another AP, does that mean I'll need another NIC? No you could buy a cheap switch and plug the AP's into that, or you could get really clever and buy a Linksys WRT54G or similar, plug both your wireless internet into it (the WRT54G is a router, switch and AP)and ur existing AP then you could use your existing AP as the bridge between yourself and your son. The WRT54G would provide you with your local wifi connection, plus its a 802.11g AP. At your sons end you'd need another AP connected to the relivant antenna, the AP could then connect to your sons laptop via ethernet or another AP. To save on costs it would be the best idea to mount on a mast so you can connect directly to your son bypassing the barn. |

Mine: N-connector $9, copper probe $0 free from a metal scrap yard, 95mm diameter alloy tube $5 an off-cut from a metal work shop in town they even gave me a flat piece for the cap. Total cost $14, cheeper if you can find a bit of tube lying around. |

For >4GHz, a flat sheet of aluminium could be mounted on the side of the barn (abaove stock level), to reflect the r.f. energy. Small mirror (temporaraly mounted on the reflector) and pen laser pointer could be used to aid in ajusting reflectors angle. For chcheep parabola antena at network ends, try this site for ideas. www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ kiwi |
