| 283891 | 2004-10-23 19:03:00 | When booting my 98se, a message is displayed that a device file: z:vvinsed.386 is missing. I have searched the system.ini files for reference to this file, but cannot find any. The Banyan Vines Network Client is not installed. If I could find a download for this Network Client, I would reinstall in order to remove the error message. I have reinstalled 98se but to no avail. Suggestions please |

| 283893 | 2004-10-23 19:20:00 | When I open my PC and try opening Windows, the following message appears: "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or systen.ini refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstalling or set-up programme. If you still want to use the application associated with device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file Z: vvinsed.386. Press a key to continue". When I press a key, Windows opens and I am able to work. But when I work on any Word document, the system hangs and I am not able to even open files. When this happens, I restart my computer in Windows Safe Mode, after which Windows application opens in the above-said procedure. Please suggest a solution. This problem occurs when some installed devices, drivers or software have been uninstalled, but their corresponding entries have not been properly removed from the registry or system files like the System.ini. This makes the OS think that these component files are still required and hence gives a `File missing' error. This problem happens mostly when the un-installation process is abruptly interrupted and terminated. One way of solving this problem is to comment the reference of the missing file in the system.ini file. To do this, please go to the start menu and click run. Type in sysedit and press enter. In the editor that opens up, go to Windows menu and click on System.ini. Next, search for the missing file entry using the search menu. In your case, search for the vvinsed.386 file and please make a a ; mark at the start of the line. Once you locate the line, this will comment the line and Windows will not try to load that file again. However, if this happens to be a file or a component of a software you are currently using, then you will have to first identify the software and reinstall it to have the problem solved. In your case, it is a problem related to "Banyan VINES network client", which is a network client service. You would have upgraded your system from Win 95 to Win 98 and the client service entry would have been left in the protocol.ini file. To solve the problem, comment the line in the system.ini file as mentioned above or go to the network properties using the network icon. Once you are there, remove any services listed as below: Banyan DOS/Windows 3.1 Client Banyan VINES Ethernet Protocol Banyan VINES token ring Protocol Click OK and restart the system. |
