1373372 2014-04-23 10:14:00 So I have quietly been researching what I can do here.
My existing Case is from an old Acer M3200. I intend to gut it out and retain my power supply, and I may as well keep the card reader and DVD drive - I use the card reader a lot, DVD seldom. The power supply is a 3 yr old Coolermaster 650w.

So...

This is what I am looking at. From what I can deduce I am building an ATX Mini (kind of) This case measures 350mm h, 450mm d, 180mm w.

Motherboard: Asus GRYPHON Z87 Micro ATX LGA1150
Processor: i7-4770S [BX80646I74770S]
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Hard Drive: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB Tri-X Toxic Video Card

And that is as far as I have got.
Questions so far...

Will the 650w power supply drive this? I use a 23" LCD screen and at times my 40" Samsung HD UA40F6400 (Smart TV). If I have to buy a new power supply I would like a bit of guidance please.
Storage: I don't know much about SSD, have I chosen a 'goodie'? I will be attaching two external HDD (any way to make them internal?) WD 1Tb and Seagate 2Tb via USB.
Other peripherals I use frequently are HP Photo printer B110 (soon to be replaced), and Wacom PTH-651 Intuos Graphics Tablet, both USB
Graphics card - Advice PLEASE!!!!!

Whilst I do play Skyrim and Dragon Age - this build is predominantly a visual artists computer...

i7 is my best choice here, its is future proofing. I have survived until now on AMD Athlon dual core because I gave it good peripherals, but I am really over waiting for 3 minutes per scan before I can start a job. Here is link to a page that explains my dilemmas - blogs.adobe.com

Feed back please.

1373373 2014-04-23 14:52:00 its a good build.

the psu will be fine.

you could save money on a lesser gpu ($300-400 should be sufficient) and still get great performance at 1080p in both games and pretty much all games for that matter. crossfire in the future is a goofy yet great future option with an i7. even a $200 gpu may suffice

nice motherboard.

hope y ou're not spending too much though, cheapest mobo and an i7 will suit your needs.

as for the externals its pretty straight forward taking them apart and tossing them in the computer assuming they are 3.5" drives. if they are 2.5" drives you'll need brackets (the cables are identical).

an SSD is an SSD as far as im concerned. get the one that suits your budget.
if you care about your data in anyway make sure you keep backups on those mechanical drives your considering mounting internally. otherwise get a second and raid1 them.

mechanical drives will ALWAYS reign supreme for mass storage (i have 4TB across various drives and dont consider it to be much space)

ram is ram. you know this already.if you can hold out 6 months get a ddr4 system. ddr3 is fine if you have an itch to scratch and by the sound of things you do.

im drunk so take everything with a grain of salt.
my iq is 154 and i've been in computers for almost 20 years, consider my words carefully.

oh and if you want lots of monitors and graphical performance of your current board is fine, get 2 single slot current gen gpus and crossfire/SLI them for multi monitors for working ahd adequate gaming performance. sell them off if you dont like the idea. it woudl be LOTS of monitors. this is probabky the drunk crazy talking... you only have 2 screens after all, id be ripping you off if i didnt share all my ideas.

peace to all. go torrent 'in your eyes'.

1373374 2014-04-23 15:02:00 GREAT BUILD

should suit you fine.

spend less on gpu and its all clear sailing.

rip hdds apart toss them in

modern igp+gpu is enough for most productivity tasks.

pay what you want torrents are the future.

1373375 2014-04-23 16:39:00 im drunk so take everything with a grain of salt.
my iq is 154
hahaha

My IQ was tested when I was at school as being 126 - quite somewhat short of being genius. When I was tested to a variety of IQ, intelligence, aptitude and mental ability tests as an adult I was rated amongst the top 4% of New Zealand's population. However, true to me being me, when I've been drinking my IQ and reasonability (along with my defence/attack mechanisms) drops to sub zero. I've got the scars and lotsa fractured ribs to show for it. Sad huh. :o

1373376 2014-04-23 20:52:00 IQ tests don't rate the quality of your advice, just saying :p

Anyway;
Yes 650W is enough, a good 500W would likely be enough try extreme.outervision.com if you have doubts
Yep it's a good choice of SSD
No Idea about the peripherals
It's a great graphics card in terms of price/performance, I have a slight preference for Nvidia myself but wouldn't fault you for getting that one. I think an r9 280 or a GTX 760 is the starting point for any semi- serious gamer and anything higher than that a matter of budget and personal choice. I'd either get the 280x or a 770 myself as the extra power means a longer useful lifespan but anything higher is just too expensive for most people and overkill for most gaming currently.

As you are re-using an older case it'd pay to measure the maximum length graphics card that will fit as a reference when choosing parts.
Also regarding external hdds - depends. Some external models are encrypted, particularly certain WD models, and will not be readable connected internally but that may not matter if you are prepared to reformat(not sure on this point). Most ext enclosures can be pulled apart and the drive used internally though some may not be designed to come apart.

1373377 2014-04-23 22:56:00 nice to know my almost 20 years of experience with computers don't mean much. that pesky high IQ always distracts people.

definitely measure the clearly the case offers for long graphics cards.

alcohol has never hindered my intellect much. although there was this one time i drank far too much and was unable to solve a rubiks cube. lots of alcohol + some weed a speed-cuber does not make. i can usually solve the cube in a minute or 2 sober, drunk OR high. combinations of mind altering substances never play out well for most people.

1373379 2014-04-24 08:39:00 Agreed!
Can anyone sober give advice please?

BTW last IQ Test I did was 121, I was 44 at the time and am still female;)

1373380 2014-04-24 10:00:00 Mirddes; you're a worry mate.

i love you too bro :D

121 is a good score, 95% of people are between 80 and 120

but in all seriousness, OP's proposed build is solid and i can't find fault with it.

1373381 2014-05-01 07:08:00 Today I got all the parts.
Now I am backing up and recording software serial numbers.
Anything else I should do before I begin dismantling?
