1372926 2014-04-17 21:58:00 Hi all
I intend to surface install the lines for our home Network change-over to ethernet.
Am I right to persist with cat6, 250mhz (though most I see are 550). We have a a modem router(Fritzbox 7270). We like to have 3-4 end connections(Lounge, Kitchen, Family area) on the house network + the other spare ports on the Fritzbox for the home office.
Would someone be able to recommend a switch for wall fixing?
Any pitfalls I need to be aware off?

Thanks

Happy Easter:)

1372927 2014-04-17 22:11:00 Our fritzbox only has 1 gigabit port and 3 normal ports. I am using the normal ports at the moment but only because I don't have a gigabit switch. My step son wired our house up no idea what he used except its cat6. he is an apprentice electrician so bought a couple of boxes home from his supplier cheap gary67 (56)

1372929 2014-04-18 00:26:00 Or use POE adapters. Altho this may cost a bit Speedy Gonzales (78)
1372930 2014-04-18 02:24:00 Pretty straight forward pirs was bit more complex had to get it to the garage and sleepout as well gary67 (56)

You mean ethernet over power? PoE is something else altogether.

1372933 2014-04-18 10:03:00 Anything 10/100. I dont think it supports 1000 Speedy Gonzales (78)
1372934 2014-04-19 00:40:00 It's not the Fritzbox line speed that should be considered, Speedy, but the inter-PC/Backup that is the issue.

@OP - Gigabit switches aren't expensive. I recently bought a TP Link 5 port one (TL-SG1005D) for under $40 and the 8 port one won't be much dearer. It is able to be wall mounted.

1372935 2014-04-19 00:47:00 I have 2 of the TP link 5 port ones myself, no issues and I've had them for ages.
Cat 6 cabling is less important than you might think, for GigE household use any CAT 5 or better cabling should work without issue. Where CAT 6 becomes important is when you run large bundles of cables together for long distances or get close to the 100 metre max link length. I have standard Cat 5 cabling to my lounge, office, and bedroom - all work at GigE flawlessly.
