1355590 2013-10-10 03:23:00 Agreed Beetle. Very odd.

Companies do buy their shares back occasionally. The reason is usually to reduce the number of shares on the market = price rise so its a reward for those who keep their shares. The theory is that the company cannot find a more efficient use for its money: in this case if MRP spent $50 million on say replacing generators, they'd be no better off. They are up to date on replacing plant already.

Nevertheless its a strange decision so soon after being listed. Why not pay down debt?

Yes but that is a politicians answer. He understands the intricate uses of capital but at the same time realises the public response is bewilderment. Which is not good for any government. John Key would look silly if he'd said to MRP - don't do it.

I'm with Labour and the Greens and agree that this undermines the privatisation efforts.

1355595 2013-10-10 12:01:00 Incidentally FYI, Air New Zealand which only exists because of a massive taxpayer introduction of cash under Labour, is currently buying up its own shares like a man with no arms! Stone the crows. Not sure why Labour and the Greens have overlooked that.

Still seems silly stuff to me - we need a treasury educated accountant on here. ;)

Two things we can't do without are electricity and oil/petrol.

Lurking.
