1355198 2013-10-09 20:11:00 A tip from a NZ garage mechanic.
Never buy a European car older than 5 years or over 100k. The Germans lost two wars in a row and I guess it was something to do with the reliability and cost of parts of their vehicles. They then never had enough money left over to buy enough bullets and bombs etc. I have seen people go into a state of shock when told how much to fix their heap of **** euro car.

Agreed, although Volvo don't seem too bad to me, unless it's electrical anyway...

Oh well must be doing something right! Got 4 European models here All of them must be on borrowed time with over 300k on the clock and over 20 years old. Actually thats not true ones got 250k on it but due to someone else incompetance is no longer roadworthy. Of the surviving 3 they have been more reliable than the same model I had in Europe when they were younger models. Then again not German but French ;)

Then we get to the 5th vehicle your NZ new Mitsi 15 years old as soon as it hit 200k the Auto gearbox let go and oil started pewing out the seems this with a full service history, but surprising to me we picked up a replacemnet gearbox or should say car with 390k on it and besides a stuffed alternator, cracked windsreen and blowing exhaust and 4 tyres runs amazingly well. But then again it also shows signs of servicing. It was just going to transplant the gearbox but after seeing the oil leaks on the other the whole engine going in. If it does another 20k I will be happy so will the missus ;)

Another observation is the parts I have had to get for the mitsi have been comparable to the Eurotrash in prices.

My conclussion is NZ mechanics just dont know how to work on anything to complicated beyond a go kart.
